L7 ~ Hungry For Stink

Amazon.co.uk

The L.A. quartet was already way up in the grrl pantheon when this disc put them over the top. "Hungry for Stink" delivers a primitive, sludgy, and pissed-off sound, but listen closer for the sonic invention on tracks like "Shirley, She Has Eyes" and "Riding With the Movie Star." --Jeff Bateman

I've always had Bricks Are Heavy down as one of the consistently brilliant albums that I own. Even to this day I rate the album just as highly as I did when I first heard it in my teens. Bizarrely though, I chose to ignore it's successor (probably due to lack of cash), until now that is.
I've had HFS for a couple of weeks now, and apart from Andres (which I sing a lot on Rock Band!) my initial reaction was that I was right to ignore it for all these years. But, with repeated listens songs started to creep out and hit me. The Bomb was the first to emerge, with its driving beat and catchy rhythm. Later down the line Riding with a movie star and Shirley have improved to belong amongst the best that L7 ever recorded.
The rest of the album is good throughout, with She Has Eyes being another stand out track.
It's been a real pleasure finally getting this album, I wish I'd done it sooner. Sure it's not as consistent as its predecessor, but when it peaks it peaks very high indeed!

This is L7 after there explosion of 'Bricks Are Heavy' album and with there biggest single 'Pretend that were Dead' so where next well in 1994 as we know it was the beginning of the end where Kurt Cobain who was in the biggest Grunge band Nirvana. Took his own life and then after that the genre started to slowly fade. But L7 put out Hungry For Stink and all seemed well. I must say if your looking for a Bricks Are Heavy theme you are most mistaken this is heavier more angry more dirty sound. Which works with L7 and i really think this is a good follow up. This proves that L7 are a good band i better band that i thought. I would say is more underground sort of sound it more less commercial.

Donita Sparks is on from as normal and this shows that Suzi Gardner who in my eyes never really showed herself til this album. she co-writes and even sings lead on tracks Andres,Stuck Here Again,Freak Magnet. The song writing is up to scratch as well and shows that the band members feel no pressure to create another 'Pretend that were Dead' and also use more creative ideas.

GGGarth the producer made an impact as well and so does Jennifer Finch who sings lead on songs The Bomb and Shirley.

This album is great. L7 are great. Jack off jill, one of my favourite bands, introduced me to L7. I read somewhere that they were described as a cross between babes in toyland and L7. The name intrigued me. So I listened. And I enjoyed.
Hungry for Stink is one of their best albums, featuring great vocals and guitar riffs that make you feel like you're watching them in an indie club.
What's even better about this version is that it's on vinyl. If you like L7 but don't have a record player, buy one. If you have a record player but haven't heard L7 , BUY THIS!

L7 CDs are amazing and this is no exception. There's nothing like some good ol' angry riot grrl music to brighten up yr day. Hungry For Stink is a good album, with 'The Bomb' being a particular standout track for me. If you don't own this album then BUY IT! But if this is your first time buying an L7 CD then I suggest you get Smell The Magic first ;D.

This group became popular during the early nineties for their onstage antics as well as their biting heavy rock sound.
This album does exactly what you expect. It´s heavy, angst-ridden rock music. L7 do that particularly well,"Bomb," being a good example. What this album does have are some interesting hooks and sonic innovation, I really like,"Fuel my fire," and,"stuck here again."
What L7 don´t have is any degree of subtlety or an alternate gear. Their music has a very limited range that doesn´t have any pull beyond the spotty teenager market.
