Susanna Sloane, brilliant and beautiful securities attorney, is married to Rusty Byers, renowned sports agent. She represents several clients who have lost money investing with Chandler & Sons, an old established Wall Street firm. She learns that their broker has been sending them falsified statements, while stealing their money--three hundred million dollars! Chandler hires her to search for the funds.
At a New Year's Eve party she meets Adnan Stephanides, a Greek billionaire, who volunteers his help. Stephanides offers to exert his influence with the bankers handling the offshore accounts in which the broker deposited the stolen funds. With his help, Susanna succeeds in locating funds in Liechtenstein, and then on Cyprus; but pays an enormous personal price.
The stockbroker, in an attempt to safeguard some money for himself, enters into a drug deal with a vicious Russian Mafioso. The CIA intervenes and arranges a meeting at the Greek's home, which goes badly when the Mafioso learns that the letter of credit taken out by the broker to pay for the heroin is a fake--Stephanides had used his influence with the bank to have it issued that way.
The Russian Mafioso puts out a contract on the broker, Susanna, and Stephanides. The CIA suggests Susanna and Stephanides take refuge at sea aboard Stephanides's yacht.
After the Russian is captured, Susanna tries the cases against Chandler, finally having to appeal the verdict.
When her husband discovers that she has been having an affair with the Greek he files for divorce. Refusing to see Stephanides, Susanna wishes for reconciliation with Rusty, which comes about with the help of an avuncular family court mediator.
