About the Author

Giles Paley-Phillips was born in East Sussex in 1977. He is a musician who has performed at Glastonbury, and is the author of nine books, including The Fearsome Beastie, which has now sold over 70,000 copies and won the People's Book Prize 2012 and the Heart Of Hawick Children's Book Award 2013. Giles has appeared on Good Morning Britain and as a judge on ITV's Share a Story. He also writes a regular book column for Title magazine and co-hosts BLANK podcast. @eliistender10

A heartfelt and emotional story of not only dealing with grief and illness but also the struggles of trying to figure out who you are through your teenage years. The friendships, the crush and the role models you have during that ‘soul-searching’ period of your life. A lot of the book resonates with characters I feel I have known growing up. I particularly felt a connection with Nana Q, certain qualities reminded me of my Nana Agnes.
I love the way the book is formatted too - the words flow easily and it keeps you gripped.

This book is for anyone who has gone through grief, illness and challenges in their life. In summary; this book is for anyone and everyone!

I know of Giles from his children's books and from his Twitter account, where I knew a little of his journey prior to the loss of his mother and the impact of her passing.
This book is a beautiful gem. Semi-autobiographical, it takes you through the emotions of someone still so young dealing with the prospect of losing a parent, and the additional trauma of being isolated from seeing his mother due to recovery from his own illness. Then of course facing the eventual passing of his mum.
Beautifully written prose in a poetic style you follow his journey back and forth from when his mother goes into hospital to when he finally can see her, and the sadness beyond.
Such loss is common ground for so many of us. It shapes us for life. And this book sums up just one journey, but one which anyone with a similar but different journey can relate to.
I cried and smiled. Couldn't put it down.
A highly recommended read.

This is a beautifully written semi-autobiographical book in an exquisite poetic style. It flows perfectly from page to page with such a wonderful rhythm. It is so captivating that you realise you've finished it and have not moved since you opened the cover. Exploring loss, grief, family dynamics and growing up in such a delicate, observational way. It is such a talent to take the small everyday things and hold people - it made me laugh and cry throughout. I keep going back to it and picking some pages to read again. I lost my father as an adult and although the circumstances are very different from the boy in the book it really resonated with me - as I think it would with so many people. Whether you have lost someone or not it is definitely worth reading - I absolutely loved it.

One moment I'm reading the first word and the next I'm reading the last. Although this book has grief, illness and family changes it also has a smouldering of hope, of love and of new beginnings. At times I felt that parts of me were being exposed for others to read and pick apart whilst I was doing the same to the words on the page! A deeply powerful book that left me wanting more of the hope that was peeking from behind the clouds

I went into this book cold. Did not read the jacket or other reviews before embarking on the author's journey. It appears like a series of poems but reads more like diary entries. By page 10, I was in tears. I had experienced a significant loss only just recently and learning of the principal character's loss caught me by my own processing grief and all of my pain bubbled to the surface in empathy.
The reader is taken on a journey of how a family is affected by the terminal illness of a loved one. How it affects the child, the extended family and the parents. It is a good look into how we need to take special care of those who are in the thick of it and how much communication and presence is needed in this very difficult time. As one reads the entries of a quietly desperate child who has not communicated his fears, his pain to an otherwise stressed family, one wishes to have been present to hold their hand and provide the much needed care. Our author reminds us that even the most unexpected helper can mean the world to a family in pain. Freya is that helper.
I came away with the knowledge that through it all; there is hope, help and caring. I am so glad I read this and would wholly recommend it to anyone processing grief and trying to get through it all. The enduring message is communication and caring.

A short book, that is far greater for it. Each chapter is a microcosm of the life of a teenage author as he deals with his mother's terminal illness, deftly conveying the depth of emotions. But also the path to overcoming grief and being able to continue with living.
As a father who has lost 2 daughters, grief is something I have had to face, painfully and lacking the answers to so many questions.
