Two big egos (Master Tan Fu ~ Chen Kuan Tai, and Master Lung ~ Lau Wing) around town, squabble their days away before the annual lantern festival. Arguing over who will have the best lantern. Lung opts for his tried and tested method of getting the best lantern maker in town to sub~contract the work and employ his 'secret' friend (an expert, reclusive lantern maker) to pull the stops out, in the hope that he might win best in show again, during the parade, and show up his current nemesis Tan Fu.
But when the pact is made, family members from both sides of the respected households soon go missing.. and with no real clues as to the whereabouts of the missing women, just accusations flying left, right, and centre, something most sinister appears to be afoot...

I forgot how good Human Lanterns was! I haven't seen this period Kung Fu/horror revenge tale in years and years (mid 90s?!).. It's corny and there's too much wire work during the fight scenes (typical for it's dark fairy tale/almost wuxia-esque characters), but I still very much enjoyed it..
It's got a really unique vibe to it, especially during the unhinged moments of female abduction. Lo Lieh's mad, lantern making serial killer, dressed up like an undead yeti, terrorising all the women cast members, as he pounces and gibbers from the trees above.
Giving the audience a character that stays just on the right side of ridiculousness by his lightening quick movements, vicious leering, and insane yammering ~ all at the flip of a switch, one connected to some very faulty brain wiring!
Ultimately giving us a bitter, hate filled creature.. That once upon a time could conceivably have been a true hero, but now someone who is only suitable to apply for jobs in Ilse Koch's local Ikea!

Lung Shu-Ai (Liu Yung) and Tan Fu (Kuan Tai Chen) are two wealthy and rival martial artists who are both determined to win the years Lantern competition, So Lung Shu-Ai visits Lantern maker Chao Chun-Fang (Lo Lieh) to pay him to create his Lantern for him, but what he doesn't know is that Chun-Fang has a secret vendetta against him and will create his Lantern using the flesh of all the women in his life, including his Sister, Wife and even his Mistress.

This is a great Shaw Brothers film that is directed by Chung Sun, whose use of blury and over exposed images which creates a ghostly and mysterious atmosphere.

What makes this film different from the usual Shaw Brothers Movie is that I couldn't really decide who the lead actor was which in my opinion made this film all the more exciting. Both Liu Yung and Kuan Tai Chen are good in their roles but the film is stolen by Lo Lieh as the madman Chun-Fang!

Even though the film is played out as a horror it isn't without its great Martial Arts action sequences which are frequent and highly exciting. From the great opening titles sequence to the end fight scene this is a fast paced, well made and unique S.B movie that is a must see.

I already have the Celestial dvd from HK but it is cut. Luckily someone alerted me to this uncut version. What a treat it is to watch this cult classic in all its uncut glory! Highly recommended! Momentum....perhaps you can serve us an uncut version of the Shaw classic "All Men Are Brothers" next?

Whilst it is true that the Momentum disc contains much more violent footage than the IVL R3 disc, it sadly turns out that the Momentum print is missing some skinning footage that was on the IVL! This is silliness on Celestial's part but the R2 disc is still worth having for the overall extra footage. If only Celestial took more care with their restorations...
