Format: Audio CD
It is good to see that NMC have restored this recording, hopefully in line with their policy, for all time to the catalogue.

Wood's Cello Concerto is an early work, but so much of what makes his music of interest to me is to be found here. It takes for granted the developments in music of the first half of the 20th century, but builds a personal lyrical, even "English" style that enables the composer to quote the Elgar Concerto without any problem to the works structure, just as Berg quotes Tristan in trhe Lyric Suite, although I am not suggesting Wood is on a par with Berg!

This is my favourite British Cello Concerto of the post war period, (yes I know the Britten and Walton) if your taste is wide enough to enjoy both Schoenberg and Elgar, it is to be strongly recomended. The performances and recording do justice to the work.

In the past I found the later Violin Concerto less satisfying, but like most music it just needed a little harder work on my part. It is somewhat more conventional and obviously virtuosic but also well worth getting to know.

Now NMC have rescued these excellent works, how about the 3rd Quartet op30
as the centre piece of a reissue of the quartets, already recorded by the Lindsays
