I've been using this for 6 weeks now while traveling UK & Spain - it seems to have no vices and reliably connects when in range. Battery life is better than expected - I have used it on battery alone for >8hr surfing/email but generally plug it into USB or mains. Wifi range is also impressive for a small unit (>30m)

Well unit arrived, the box wasn't sealed and this proved to be a sure sign of problems. Unpackaged unit and it looked someone had done it over with sand paper, scratches and damage to every surface of the unit, no user guide but a new looking and sealed micro usb cable.

Didn't bother powering up as the unit IS second hand, considering this came direct from Amazon.co.uk I am very surprised, shockingly bad behaviour and the kind of crap expected from a dodgy market stall or e-bay.

This device delivers a solid Wi-Fi signal up to about 30ft range. Performance is then dependent on the strength of the mobile network signal. At my home that's a bit patchy but solved it by putting it on top of high bookshelf near window. Most other places I've tried and at my work its very strong.
Setting up was very easy except that at first could not find security password anywhere in supplied paperwork or on box -- its on a little sticker inside battery cover of device!
Seems to be ideal for emails and light web browsing - experience of data usage so far suggests that watching films could get very expensive.
Please note that the E585 E586 charging cradle from another seller on Amazon.uk DOES NOT FIT this E586ES.

Used this in Mallorca with a local SIM card and it delivered like a home wifi router in the apartment. Very useful out and about as well. Money well spent!!!

**UPDATE**
Since my original review, used this on holiday and it worked very much as it did in the UK. I just popped the SIM in, it recognised the network and I was able to use it and connect other devices without any problems. I do think it comes down to network as one SIM I tried didn't work either on my phone or in the MIFI. The only surprise is that the price has shot up since I bought mine. Overall it's a good buy, especially when you can see the MBs ticking down in seconds!

*******************************************************************

I bought this because it was less expensive than the E586 and had an LED screen unlike the cheaper E5331. The bonus for me is that it shows how many KB/MB you've used which is great if you're on a limited data plan. I hadn't read many (or any) of the reviews here, but after I received the device I read the reviews and started to get nervous, thinking I bought a potential disaster.

Put in a Virgin SIM (which came up as T-Mobile!) and within minutes had connected a Nexus 7, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Android Smartphone and even my Windows 8 laptop. I even borrowed my sister's iPhone and was able to connect in seconds - yes, it seriously was that quick and easy. I even was able to access the settings for the device on my tablet. It showed the H+, H (HSDPA) and 3G signals but mainly flickered between the latter two.

I'm going to be travelling in a couple of weeks; where I'm going the internet connection is temperamental, but at least I've proved I can get it to work in the UK. I guess the device is only as good as the mobile network connection?

purchased through Amazon, unlocked Huawie E586
excellent, would be 5 stars if i could find out how to access / download to micro SD card.
Read a number of reviews for similar products, this seemed to be the best. Wanted to use with Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 2 as only WIFI & Bluetooth. Small device, delivered well packaged with separate battery & cable ( Free usb in car charger, with this supplyer; took max of 3 days, Glad I took risk, (no reviews). Charged battery switched on, screen asks for sim card. I've used three now, Tesco payg, Asda payg & 3 network preloaded sim. All worked & connected reasonably quickly without any fuss.
With 3 sim inserted seemed almost as fast as my home Broadband. Main purpose was to access BBC Iplayer & internet radio when away in UK. BBC Iplayer would not run on ASDA or Tesco Sims. Kept on asking to join internet! but would on 3. Carried out car test on the move ,which worked ok for internet access, will try later for IPlayer. We visit a few uk places that have reduced coverage, ie parts of Weymouth, Will report again. Performance varies on signal strength. battery lasted for about three hours on accessing various web pages & listening to Iplayer. Unit lists download used MB, but seems to show use from all three cards ( 420mb 3 days of testing).
I have now put away my old Vodaphone dongle So Slow.

I ordered this to provide more flexibility with mobile broadband than a directly connected dongle. Unfortunately the device failed to hold a 3G or HSUPA signal and fell back to 2G despite the same SIM/network being mid-strength 3G and solid connectivity in the dongle. I tried a different network SIM (from a phone, which gets HSUPA at my location) but same problem - 2G only. Both networks show high speed mobile broadband coverage in my area. Unless it was a faulty unit, this device isn't capable of the same signal strength reception as the same network with a dongle or phone. It does have a connection for an external antenna, but that I don't need to use one with anything else and it seems a good antenna is neither very mobile or inexpensive.
Two stars because the set up is straightforward, there is also a browser page for you to set your own SSID, key etc.

Also don't be misled by the title/description of "3G/4G MiFi" the device does not provide 4G capabilities.
