I bought my girlfriend a Huawei E586 MiFi unit for work - it was so good that I decided that I'd like to have my own MiFi for use with my iPad (WiFi) version. I looked at this unit in locked form on the 3 Network and functionally there is very little difference between this and the more expensive E586. This E5331 MiFi is the "value model" in Huawei's range, and, in my opinion, its broadband performance is as good as the E586 which costs around £30 more. The main difference between the two units is that the E586 sports an OLED display which displays the amount of data you've used, and, therefore, you get plenty of warning when you need to buy another SIM card. However, you can easily navigate to a web page with the E5331 which gives you all the usage information you'll need, although, it isn't displayed on the unit itself. There are, however, LED indicators for battery power, broadband signal, wireless on and email on the unit.

Battery life is good lasting around 5 hours and a mains charger is supplied together with a USB lead which can recharge the unit from a PC, albeit, more slowly than from the mains charger. You can connect up to 5 wireless devices and connection is simple, you just enter the security code from the unit when prompted, and, that's it - you're connected. Of course with PAYG if you lose the unit your loss is limited to the amount of credit remaining on the card.

One thing that is certain is that it is cheaper to buy a new SIM card on the 3 Network at Amazon prices rather than to top up the expiring SIM card. The two main 3 Network options available are 1GB to be used within a month or a 3Gb card valid for 3 months. There is also a 12GB option valid for a year.

I needed a mifi that I could do what I wanted with without any network restrictions. This sim free mifi does the trick. I've tested it on O2, EE and three in the UK and vodafone MT in malta. You simply pop in the SIM and go, the only time this doesn't apply if you have a sim that piggybacks on another's network and requires manual settings like giffgaff which uses O2's. Everything works and the mifi is great at picking up signal. It's small, slim, puck like nature lets you slip it into your pocket or bag with no issues.

Once connected, either through USB or wifi you can log into it and play with the settings, encryption, NAT, sleep mode, cellular, etc. The main ones are there, there's even port forwarding and DMZ so it's rather like an off the shelf 3rd party router, just for 3G.
I've set the sleep settings as conservative as they can be which allows me to easily get a good days use on my iPad or laptop as it automatically sleeps when I stop using it for 10 minutes. You just tap the power button to fire up the wifi instantly when you need it.

Please note, this is a HSPA+ device. It won't do DC-HSPA+ nor will it do LTE. If you want a mifi that supports those features be prepared to shell out far more. However this mifi can easily get 10-15 meg down and ~3-4 meg up on three which I've decide to stick with while in the UK.

Had an E5830 from 3 before but, this device is unlocked to any network so I can take it on holiday which is really handy. I manage to get download speeds of over 12Mbps which is even faster than my home broadband! The other brilliant thing with the E5331 is 8 devices can connect to it, when most other MiFi's I've looked at only 5 can connect.

All in all I would defiantly recommend it.

This unit worked perfectly using a Vodafone SIM card (from an old 3G plug-in modem on an existing 3Gb/month low tariff contract).

First charge (cable but no charger included) for 4 hours. Then connect via USB cable (supplied) to to PC; software installs automatically which enables the unit to be set up: SSID, WPA key (= password), plus other optional settings. Software also displays useful information - battery state, total volume of data downloaded, etc. Also the Help facilities on this software are useful to non-expert users - including explanation of terms/abbreviations.

WiFi linked to laptop (Windows 7), iPhone 4 and iPad (both iOS 6) with no problems - just select the relevant SSID name from the list displayed on user device and enter the password.

Once set-up, the unit is very easy to use (one button - on/off); automatic connection of user device WiFi via 3G to internet in 20-40 seconds.
Maximum download data rate 3.5Mbps - taken from speedtest.net (3G only, haven't tested HSPA+ yet).
Maximum WiFi range appears to be about 25 yards (Obviously this depends partially on the WiFi tx/rx in the user device.)

The mechanical design/construction of the unit is adequate to good - but you wouldn't want to have open and close it too often, and avoid dropping it on to a concrete floor from a height of 6' or more.

NB: Recent price increase - I bought it for £46:90 on 28/1/2013.

I have been using this device for a few months now in conjunction with my Nexus 7 tablet to give me wide ranging connectivity. It was very simple to set up and has performed flawlessly on the 3 network. I used a SIM that had previously been in a USB dongle but that was no use for connecting to the tablet. This configuration gives me many more options as I can still use it with the laptop the dongle originally served.
