Herbert Howells 1892-1983

In 1915 Herbert Howells was diagnosed with Graves disease and given six months to live. Since doctors believed that it was worth taking a chance on a previously untested treatment, he became the first person in the country to receive radium treatment. Fortunately he overcame this and died many years later in 1983

If you have seven minutes to spare listen to Three Dances for Violin and Orchestra: Opus 7, 2. Quasi lento, quieto and if it doesn't move you, I would be surprised. This little known piece of music sums up just how short and precious life is and in this beautiful piece of music you will surely discover the meaning of life. It is also available as a track on other Herbert Howells CDs, so shop around.

Herbert Howells was born in Lydney, Gloucestershire, and was the youngest of six children born to Oliver and Elizabeth Howells. His father was an amateur organist, and Herbert himself showed early musical promise. He studied first with Herbert Brewer at Gloucester Cathedral, as an articled pupil alongside Ivor Novello and Ivor Gurney, the celebrated English songwriter and poet, with whom he became great friends. A September 1910 concert in Gloucester Cathedral included the premiere of a mysterious new work by the yet little-known Ralph Vaughan Williams.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inviting and invigorating. 10 Jan. 2003

This is refreshing, wonderful sounding music. For me, it's an amalgam or perhaps a distilled essence of the glory of the tradition of British composers. I find Howells to be a very creative and somewhat distinctive musical personality. At times, his music displays an airy, soaring quality of lyricism. In addition, there is both playfulness and pensiveness. All of these qualities are apparent in Suite for Orchestra 'The B's', as they are in the exquisite Three Dances for Viola and Orchestra, performed with Lydia Mordkovitch. Though I'm not a great fan of vocal music, In Green Ways is quite charming in its own way. If you appreciate the likes of Vaughan Williams, Parry etc. and you've never sampled Howells' music before you should do so now. Either this disc or his first volume of orchestral works, also on the Chandos label with Hickox conducting, is a good place to start.
