I think the Novel was probably of its time . Slightly Jaded . The characters appeared real , but their stories were too contrived for me . Not my type of Novel .

This was my first western book. I chose it partly because I was familiar with the film version. I thought that would give me a way into the book as I would have a bit of a start knowing the storyline. I didn't need a start as the story carried me along from the beginning. I usually "cast" a book. Taking the description of
the characters and putting a face to them. Then the book plays like a film in my imagination. The writing style was easy and very descriptive. I thoroughly recommend this book whether you have seen the film or not. It has kindled my interest in the western genre. (no pun intended!)

This is a novel that touches on the events that made the American West a place of such enduring fascination. Louis Lamour is a wonderful story teller, this book is a tale that follows a pioneering family from the rivers through the Civil War to the great plains. The reader follows two sisters leading very different lives, we see the coming of the settler, the destruction of the buffalo, the betrayal of the native Americans, the growth of the railroad, the tragedy of conflict and the decline of the outlaw. Life on the river boats and in the saloons to the wagon trains and the mining camps is captured in a rich tapestry of adventure and romance. If you are a western fan this is a real treat.

I thought the film was great and now I understand why. The book is a truly epic saga of the West. Better than the film. The characters and their adventures are brought to life. You are excited by their adventures and truly sad when they end.

Watched the film years ago. Only just got around to reading the book. Great story, well told. Covers the progress of an extended family over a couple of generations. Certainly one of my favourite books in the genre.

I read this book thirty years ago. I found it on kindle and it is one that I will read again after all that time because when I read it I am the third unseen person in the scene in my mind and it is an easy read.
