I haven't finished this slim volume yet, but was really surprised at the style: very short sentences and almost chatty. Maybe it was designed for a student audience. I was expecting some more analysis and philosophical debate on the subject, rather than just a mass of detail with a very 'cut and dried' feel about it.

This is not an academic review.
AJP Taylor was always looked down on by his fellow historians. The more he appeared on television, the more he was squinted at.

As a television presenter, he had a remarkable presence and seemed to lecture without notes. Usually he was presented as a 'talking head' and managed to keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

This means that transcripts or writings of his are 1) not easily available. [any historian worth his salt will say, "don't read Taylor on that, read well me instead...."] and 2) in demand by those who remember his appearances.

This is a book which he introduced on the lines of 'everyone knows how wars begin, but how wars end is not much studied'

Chief sections are 1815 and 1918. Big section on the loss of Napoleons Grand Armee 1812

Excellent book. Exactly what I wanted. This book does what it said on the cover: tells you about how wars end

I really enjoyed this book. AJPTaylor is always good. Says it how it is and doesn't waffle. I was really pleased to find it as I have lots of his and could never find this one. Will deal with this seller again.

Having read some other books of A.J.P. Taylor I had much higher expectations of this book. I found it rather superficial and dumbed-down. I had expected from a man of Taylor's erudution a more profound and elaborated work. Maybe because it is a Channel Four book he couldn't make much more of this subject. Of course I learned some new information so the purchase wasn't a total waste after all.

What you would have expected from Taylor. Well worked arguments - you certainly know what he thinks!
