This is a “serious” business book on selling online. It is full of useful tips on how to reach the customers you want (need?) and covers a lot of ground from understanding (and attractive) your customer demographic all the way to your website security. I’ve been in I.T. for almost 30 years but have only (so far) dabbled with selling online through your usual channels (eBay, Amazon etc). But I’m looking to take this a lot more seriously in the next 2-3 years so this book has come along for me at just the right time. I know how to build websites but this book shows me how to build them to attract my customers and that’s a BIG help!

The book is divided into sections on Retail truths, Attracting more customers, selling more, surprising customer service and Key opportunities in the coming year and these sections are sub-divided into chapters. Each chapter is sensibly set out and gives you the information in small chunks rather than log-winded waffle – so it is easier to absorb the information. There are extra boxes set out like “Lessons for you” which give you a quick glance at useful info/insights etc to help you along the way… and “Recommended actions” – advice to make your business more helpful and successful.

I’m really impressed with the book and am finding it hard not to give it 5 stars… so I have…

Anyone going into the business of selling needs to be able to do so online. It is now almost essential and most customers now probably browse before they buy. Many probably spend almost as much online as they do in the shops. This book is essential reading for selling online. It is werll written and easy to read. It is well set out. It gives very good examples. There are case studies. It provides recommendations for the way ahead at the same time as making clear one fit does not fit all. It deals with the various technologies. The rise of the smartphone being the obvious example as many now browse using their smartphone. It also deals with social media and the opportunities that arise from that. It is a book that is also thought provoking which is the ever changing and fast moving world of technology it seems to me is a good thing because what is written today might not be for tomorrow. If you are thinking of selling online or already do, I would suggest this is essential reading. Highly recommended.

Really interesting read for anyone who's started or is thinking of starting an online business. Lot's of useful references, interviews and stories to back it all up to! Highly recommended!
