This is the various artists soundtrack to Gerry and the Pacemaker's 1964 film which featured Cilla Black in a cameo role, where she sang her song 'Is it love' written by Bobby Willis [her husband]. I'd buy it just for that alone.
To top it off the other LP included features the bands #1 smash 'You'll never walk alone'.
A well worth buy if you're a fan of the Mersey Scene music. Also in this new series of CDs by EMI are titles by Lulu, Cilla Black, Freddie & The Dreamers etc.

If any band looked as though they would challenge the Beatles in the charts in 1963, at the start of the Merseybeat era, it was another Liverpool group from the Brian Epstein stable - Gerry and the Pacemakers. They consisted of lead singer Gerry Marsden, his brother Freddie Marsden, Les Chaswick and Les Maguire. Although also comprising of four members, the Pacemakers differed from most bands around Liverpool at that time, as they used piano, as well as guitars. Their first three singles famously made number one, but despite Gerry Marsden proving himself an excellent songwriter (penning "It's Gonna Be All Right," "Ferry Cross the Mersey," and the beautiful, "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying") chart success was sadly almost over by the end of 1964. So, a short lived, but remarkable chart career - which included success in the States - and Gerry Marsden is still touring today.

This package includes the Pacemakers first two UK albums: "How Do You Like It?" in 1963 and "Ferry Cross the Mersey," which was recorded for their feature film in 1965.

"How Do You Like It?" is an extremely strong debut album, obviously released to capitalise on three number one singles and also produced by George Martin. The track listing is as follows:

A Shot of Rhythm and Blues
Jambalaya
Where Have You Been?
Here's Hoping
Pretend
Maybellene
You'll Never Walk Alone
The Wrong Yo-Yo
You're the Reason
Chills
You Can't Fool Me
Don't You Ever
Summertime
Slow Down

Although Gerry Marsden is not yet showing his song writing potential (the Pacemakers famously having a number one hit with the song, "How Do You Do It?" which the Beatles rejected), this is a great album.

How do I like it? Well, I like it very much. Having lived through the excitements of the 1960s and '70s, this recording is a great nostalgia trip. Bursting onto the international music scene in 1963, Gerry and the Pacemakers provided a distinctive Liverpool sound for some years until the more psychedelic sounds came to the fore. Gerry's voice has a wholesome, throaty quality. That, and the backing combination of guitars, drums and piano, have stood the test of time surprisingly well.

This 2-on-1 CD offering provides excitement (of the dancehall variety) with numbers such as A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues, Pretend and Slow Down (which is good advice, but impossible to do with music like this!) The early album was American flavoured; the second, being the soundtrack from Ferry Cross The Mersey, has a more romantic and uniquely Liverpudlian flavour. Standout tracks are the stunning, and moving You'll Never Walk Alone, a superb version of Gershwin's Summertime, and the haunting Ferry Cross The Mersey. Wonderful stuff!

The first 1/2 of the CD is fab, great songs and a lovely 60's sound.
The second 1/2 sounds a bit uncomfortable with itself but as a bonus it's fine.
Recommended.
