Perhaps staring at the book had prepared my mind somehow (loosening the jar lid principle?), but I don't think so. I did buy this simply to learn the basics of how to knit, so wasn't fussed by the reviews that mentioned how limited the patterns are. However, since I couldn't grasp the basic instructions at all, the book isn't much use to me now, because I do find the patterns a bit twee -- knitted flowers etc.
To be fair, I think this is aimed at children for whom the projects would appeal more -- and everyone is different. It might work for you, but (much as I love books) I found it far easier to follow online videos.
The spiral-binding is a great idea, and I think this would make a good gift for a little boy or girl *if* there was a knitting-competent adult nearby to help along.
But, just a month after buying this book, I've been able to knit flowers, phone socks, purses, and more!
I've even bought a book on Toys to knit, and have made quiet a nice pony.
It's a great starting point. Nice and clear, and confidence building.
I would recommend it for the young, or awkward like me!
