Great for explaining to my four year old twins, nephew and niece, that they cannot always cuddle the animals and that if their mummy is stressed, sometimes it's best to give her some time and make up with a big hug. Also they now know that their auntie is always ready for a hug and has an unlimited supply to give out! Nice way to end the night reading this story with an 'I love you' hug then 'night night, sweet dreams" and they (usually) don't get back up out of bed but just drift off.

“How to Hug” a children book written by Maryann MacDonald and imaginatively illustrated by Jana Christy brings a story that tells about the hugs, the right way to show someone that we care.

The author gives many advices on different types of hugs, about when, how and who you should hug because there are various hugging types for different people and beings around us. Hugs are part of some cultures - in some parts of the world it is quite normal to hug someone who is not so close to us, while in other parts hugging is a way to show the deepest feelings only for loved ones.

In this sense, “How to Hug” deals with this subject in a lovable and funny way, although at some points it is not clear whether the author is joking when saying that we should not hug someone who is angry or author means it seriously as we hope it’s not true.
Though the text is sometimes questionable, all of that is compensated with entertaining and imaginative Jana Christy’s digital illustrations which show different situations of friendships between children and animals while hugging each other - carrying a great message of mutual love and friendship with animals.

Overall, Maryann MacDonald and Jana Christy made a nicely illustrated book that for the most part brings very entertaining text teaching children social interaction by promoting the ideas of friendship, intimacy and love. And these are the reasons why this picture book should be recommended.

Something nice for picture based nightime and bedtime stories. We like to have short bedtime stories, but discuss each picture, who is in it and what's happening. This is beautifully designed and a joy to read with my 2 year old & 10 month old.
