The exercises in part one are fun, creative and quite revealing (I loved revisiting my childhood daydreams and finding out what they were telling me about the what work might suit me best).
It took time to work through them but it was so worth it - I learned a lot and they helped confirm my suspicions about what my next career move should be. Now I need to put the information in part 2 into use to hopefully get there!
The information on how to find jobs that aren't advertised is particularly useful, I'm excited to try contacting potential employers that I would never have thought of before - especially because I want to build a portfolio career.
There's a chapter on setting up your own business which looks good (I know this having been in business)
Really well-written too, the author made me feel comfortable and inspired, even though the job-hunt isn't really a fun thing to go through. Another bonus - unlike other books, this one doesn't expect us all to be whizz-bang hotshot business people, it reassures us it's OK to go after "normal" work too, as long as it's based on our own abilities and what we enjoy!
*****
Rather, it's packed to the gunnels with useful exercises to help people find their passion and even to discover a way to get paid for 'loving the work they do'.
Its practicality goes further than its wonderfully simple and voluminous exercises. We are shown how we don't have to give up our day job and start out solo in some form of entrepreneurial activity, we can find our Vital Vocation inside conventional employment. It shows us how to identify our core talent and build our vocation from the inside out, as opposed to it being superimposed upon us.
This book is not just for employees, employers and HR directors can discover much here to help incentivise their staff. A happy workforce is a productive workforce after all. If you aren't happy in your life and your work, this book is just what you have been looking for.
My only beef with this book is that I didn't have a copy 30 years ago.
