The other thing about Adobe products is that they are very expensive so the urge to update is tempered by the fact that in Adobe World one US dollar eguals one UK pound; therefore it is a real pleasure to discover that 'How To Do Everything Adobe InDesign CS4' by Donna Baker and Laurie Ulrich Fuller is both affordable and extremely useful. I purchased my copy alongside Adobe InDesign CS4 How-Tos: 100 Essential Techniques and can confirm that between them I have not yet encountered a challenge I have not overcome. Each book compliments the other.
These books do not offer to take you by the hand and walk you through a series of tutorials they cater for the 'jump in and swim' folk who need to understand how to simply and rapidly achieve the effect your desire.
'How To Do Everything Adobe InDesign CS4' masters in explaining how to 'do things properly in the first place' and in such a way as the memory of the process sticks. I like the relaxed informative writing style, the use of colour screen grabs that really help compare what you see on your computer screen with what you see on the page of 'How To Do Everything Adobe InDesign CS4'
My only criticism of this book is that sometimes it can assume the reader is already aware of some aspect or feature and does not include a 'reminder' or page link. Searching the book can eventualy deliver the solution but it is this lack of 'roundness' that keeps this review to 4 stars. whilst I do recommend this book I also would say that it wise to also buy Adobe InDesign CS4 How-Tos: 100 Essential Techniques as its companion
