Review

The ultimate early years bible. --Nursery Education PLUS Magazine, January 2009.

I cannot recommend [it] more highly! Absolutely fantastic as the students are able to study theorists in a dynamic and interesting user friendly way. I love the way theorists an approaches are 'de-mystified'. --Meg Ord-Hume, Senior Tutor in Early Years, Chiltern Training Limited, Reading.

A perfect introductory text for our incoming education students. --Robyn Cox, Principal Lecturer, The University of Worcester.

Really helped give me a basic outline of each theorists life and studies. Has been my bible for my foundation degree in early years. --Amy Jones, Foundation degree student, North Wales.

A really easy way for students to understand theories of learning and the approaches of the theorists. --Stephanie Schofield, Childcare Team Leader, Newcastle College.

Useful text for 2nd year nursing students who are introduced to learning theories. A very informative text, which is user-friendly. --Margaret Cotter, Lecturer in Intellectual Disability Nursing, Dundalk Institute of Technology, Ireland.

This book enabled students to access key theories of how children learn and for the modules I taught: Children and Play, Young Children's Development and Play Activities, was a popular resource where students took the ISBN number and therefore I will be recommending this book on the reading list for the new academic year and to be purchased by our library. --Josephine Campbell, Lecturer in Early Years and Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, Boston College, Lincolnshire.

An excellent book that breaks down the theorists in detail and easy for learners to relate to. Book relates well to practice. Fantastic Book! Highly recommended. --Laura Miller, Course leader in Childcare, Newcastle College.

Synopsis

How do children learn - and why do we teach them the way we do? Educational theorists and psychologists have researched the subject for more than 200 years. Their theories still influence the way we teach today. This book summarises the findings and ideas of some of them - famous names such as Montessori and Piaget as well as lesser-known ones such as Dewey and Donaldson. It also looks at the theory behind different approaches to early years education - High/Scope, Steiner, the Italian pre-schools of Reggio Emilia and the early years curriculum in New Zealand.
