This book is obviously a rehash of the other How to Cheat in Photoshop books which sometimes does not quite work, as PS CC has some minor changes to the way it works compared to other versions. I am steadily working my way through the book and it is good to have the reference files on the website and movies to view. Steve Caplin has obviously been at it a number of years and has learnt just about everything there is to know about tweaking images in Photoshop to create a montage. I found this a book to keep dipping into and a good resource on how to achieve a particular image, or which technique to actually use for an effect. You can spend hours playing and hopefully this time will shorten as my knowledge increases. The website also has a good forum and Friday challenge which looks worthwhile to test skills, which I hope to have a go at. Already I have managed to move a lizards tail using puppet warp and give a good shadow to make it realistic and better composition, using techniques from the book. Worth the asking price if you are into PS CC.

Excellent book and from an Englishman, which means he doesn't, a point he makes clear, use the word 'pants' for 'trousers'. (Someone else wrote a photoshop book which all through it uses 'em instead of them, which meant I totally won't buy it, no matter how good it is. I spend ages telling my child to speak English correctly or else don't bother, so same rules apply to me too). So it is nice to hear English as it was meant to be spoken.

So to the book it's self. Well the author has amassed nearly all the photos he uses on to a web site and allows you to download them and follow through his lessons. And that works very well. There are also videos, (five hours worth), which you have to watch on the webpage, but again, these help very much in what is for a lot of people a steep learning curve. I brought three books to learn with, and by far the best is this one. You do have to have some experience with photoshop, if you are a beginner then there is a lot you won't know. This is after all not a manual on using photoshop but really how to do photomontages, or compositing. There are other online resouces to help you. I have paid for and downloaded some of them and they are very good, but sometimes you just need a hard copy, something you can flip open and simply see and read how to do a certain action. Video is good for that, but it is clumsy, so while I have them and use them, I like to work my way through a book like this.

Steve is a good teacher, the videos especially have a relaxed easy tone in the way he delivers them, you feel he is there, almost.

So if you want to learn how to create photomontages then I would have to say this book is the pick of the bunch. Excellent and works very well for me. Five stars, as simple as that.

The book explains many techniques in a simple way. These are backed up by videos on the authors web site and a forum which welcomes advice on any of the techniques. The forum is also viewed by the author who often contributes replies
