The Housekeeper - Love this book didnt want it to end! as I do with all the Greek Village/Greek Island series - us villagers always want more -

If you havent read any of the Sara Alexi Greek Village/Greek Island series books - then get going - start today! I guarantee you will fall in love, as we villagers have done for the past few years, with all the characters from this wonderful hot sunny busy village in Greece! Try to read them in order - so you can get to grips with these beautiful down to earth gorgeous people that come from Sara Alexis imagination!!

Sara cannot write quick enough for us!

I wonder - how much of The Greek Village series is autobiographical ? Sara writes with such passion and understanding it is hard to believe it is purely fictional. I am sure that this is why the books are so eminently readable. Wonderful to go 'back to the beginning' and learn more of Juliet's life and WHAT a character Poppy is ! Once again I can't wait for the next one. Well Done Sara x

Sara Alexi weaves past with present in this sparkling new story that takes us back to the village in Greece that her readers have grown to love. Juliet, the English woman whose story is told in the first book in the series, again takes centre stage, when Poppy, the sweet old lady who runs the Village jumble shop comes to her for English lessons. As Poppy's story unfolds, both she and Juliet learn that for all their differences, they share a worldview that is their strength, but also their weakness. This is a beautiful story of friendship (nobody writes female friendship better than Sara), aging (Juliet learns to see an old lady as a whole, complex woman--as an older woman myself, I am impressed by Alexi's nuanced portrayals of old age), trust (so easy to say, so hard, sometimes, to do) and love (that would be telling!). If you liked any of the Greek Village series, you will love this touching story, which could also work as a stand alone novel.

I have read all the Greek Village series in order and they are so addictive. 'The Housekeeper' develops the relationship between two women we have met before but as characters their lives have hardly touched. Juliet, we know quite well as the English woman who came to the village to start a new life, and Poppy, who has briefly appeared as a rather grumpy old lady who runs a second-hand shop off the Main Street. Coming from very different backgrounds, cultures and generations, both women discover their need for the other as the story unfolds. However, things get off to an awkward start when their initial perceptions of each other contain some negative stereotypical assumptions and expectations. Then, in learning of Poppy's troubled history, Juliet discovers she can relate her own emotional experiences and personal challenges. Both women start to recognise how their shared personality traits of pride and independence of spirit have hindered them from coming to terms with the past. This shared understanding and support enables Juliet to overcome her present uncertainties and brings Poppy some late happiness. And so, with much satisfaction from this reader, their stories move on.

This is a story of Poppy, a one time housekeeper who once worked for a family on Orino Island and her relationship to the son of the family. A tale of hardship, love,, pain and self discovery and final contentment and a new beginning. As she tells her story to Juliet we see some parallels and this shapes Juliet's own world viewpoint, away from isolation and her growing attraction to Miltsos and how to deal with it.

A lovely book about a painful past and self discovery

Sara Alexi has a great gift for telling a tale. I loved this story. Another piece of the village puzzle added. Poppy and Juliet are the focus this time. Not spoiling it for anyone. The ending was perfect. I love the way Sara tells a true story. Warts and all.

Another triumph. As with all Sara's books, I couldn't stop reading, but I didn't want it to end. Sara has created a virtual village, peopled with so many diverse characters yet she manages to weave their stories inextricably together. She has a real insight into human nature and it shines through in her writing. I can't wait for the next instalment.
