There is plenty of action, angsty romance, style and glamour combined with ruthless politics and suspense. The writing sweeps you along as Alivia is forced to make difficult decisions and face her new reality and at the end, once again, is a cliffhanger that leaves you ravenous for the next one.
However I did not give this five stars as I feel that, like the first one, the pacing and depth of this story is not quite right. Alivia's inner turmoil is explored more in this book but the plot moves at such a breakneck pace that leads to an all too sudden end. This series has real potential and if the author had slowed down and fleshed out certain scenes a bit more, given the reader greater insight into the many new characters who come into the new House for example, this could be epic.
As it is, its a gripping but light read. Nothing too challenging. Like the first, there is no actual sex, no swearing, and the violence is all quite mild. As I said in my review for the first book, I think this book struggles from neither being for young adults or adults exactly, since the lead character's age is 22/23. However I realise that one of the points of this is that Alivia is in that transitioning phase and that the changes happening to her echo those happening to most of us as we are forced to grow up after leaving university to become 'proper adults'.Read more ›
I love the uniqueness of this series, the new take on a vampire story, not something that has been rehashed.
It's character driven and the characters are complex and each bring something to the table.
'Liv has an amazing journey and I love who she is starting to become, how little things, one small decision can have consequences that change the course of your life and of those around you and how quickly ones life can change.
The new characters that are introduced are well developed and very interesting the old characters are just getting more and more interesting, our glimpse into their past are intriguing and give us a look into how they become who they are today.
I don't want to spoil anything for the readers so I am not going to say anything about the actual plot line.
This is a series that I can't put down and cannot wait for 'House of Kings' to see what the next chapter of her life is like.
The second instalment of Alivia’s story is even more powerful than the first. I love how she matures and grows, as her character evolves into something so much more than the first book. We see new beginnings and new hope in this novel. Alivia is strong and brave and believable. Her character draws the reader in and holds them there with her, until the very end.
‘House of Pawns’ has every you could ask for in a novel of this kind. It comprises of an intricate series of twists and turns, intermingled with mystery, love and of course, vampires. If you’re looking for your next trilogy then look no further. Keary Taylor has done it again and left us awaiting the arrival of the third book with much anticipation. It really can't come soon enough!
