Product Description

Seeking shelter from a storm, abandoned young cat Thunder sneaks into a mysterious mansion owned by retired magician Lawrence, aka "The Illustrious Lorenzo". Lawrence shares his fairy-tale world with many animals and a dazzling array of automatons and gizmos capable of whipping up breakfast while rolling out a spectacular song-and-dance routine. He soon makes Thunder feel welcome, but Jack the rabbit and Maggie the mouse start plotting to get him kicked out. When Lawrence ends up in the hospital, his nephew tries to trick him into selling the house. But its ragtag inhabitants develop a spooky strategy to defend their home. They turn their house into a haunted mansion, using Thunder as their secret weapon...

Great film for all ages with some good 3D effects if that's what your after. Please note though that if you buy the 3D version, the actual case cover makes no mention of 3D at all. Not even on the back or anywhere. At first I thought maybe the supplier had sent the wrong version because although my disc had a cardboard slipcase (which does state 3D) the case itself didn't... and the disc doesn't either. To most people it looks like a regular 2D version. It's only when you put the disc in your player, you will see the option to play in either 2D or 3D. Just thought I would mention this in case you thought you were sent the wrong version.

This is quite a fun, CGI cartoon kids film that is well worth a watch. Asides from a mildly distressing scene at the beginning where 'Thunder' the little ginger kitten and protagonist of the film is callously abandoned by his owner, there is much entertainment to be had from this little film that may have slipped past some readers radar because of the big budget competition from Planes 2 and The Nut Job. The plot, such as it is concerns the aforementioned Thunder wandering into a run down house whilst trying to find a new home. He finds the elderly magician owner of the house instantly takes a like to him, but a rabbit and mouse do not and do everything they can to get rid of him. Meanwhile an unscrupulous relative of the magician tries to have the old man put in a retirement home and sell the house behind his back ultimately leaving them all homeless. Thunder and the rest must set aside their differences and help the old man realise what is happening before it is too late.

House of Magic may not have the backing of a big Hollywood studio but it is a very well animated family film with a fun but moral story and a very cute kitten at the centre of it. Whilst it may be not hit the heights of the Toy Story series or some of the DreamWorks or Blue Sky studios animations, it is still good fun for younger viewers....and people who like cats.

Tiny children in the audience shouting at the baddies was great!
If there's a song to sum up this film: 'I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends.'
There was a lot of charm and warmth to this film mainly due to the character of the old magician who lives alone in a big spooky looking mansion, with his clockwork and automaton creatures a rabbit and a mouse, who are fiercely protective. It is visually stunning, exciting animation, utterly charming and very funny for all ages.

The House of Magic is a great animated story and I enjoyed it immensely. Thunder, the poor little orphaned cat has to find himself shelter and a new home and thinks he's found the perfect place after stumbling into the House of Magic, however, the other residents don't seem as enthusiastic to have him as their new companion and promptly do everything in their power to get rid of him. This sets of a chain of events which puts the whole family at risk and could lead to disastrous consequences and so they have to pull together to try to save their home as well as themselves. This film would be a great movie for any family to watch and is now one of my favourite animated movies.

I went to see this with my near-four year old daughter and we both really enjoyed the film. It isn't exceptional like WALL-E, Up or Ratouille, but it's definitely a head and shoulders above the pack of derivative animated A and B movies (e.g. Planes, Khumba, Rio 2, Nut Job or the Ice Age sequels).

The body language of the cat is well observed and, like a YouTube cat clip, is entertaining to watch in itself. The other characters are also well thought out and reasonably developed - for example the magician comes across as a character who always thinks the best of people, the cranky old rabbit is genuinely cranky without being reduced to being a good guy or a bad guy, and the bizarre collection sentient enchanted contraptions that the magician has built add a different dimension - they don't talk or have facial expressions and don't attempt Christmas cracker grade American wise-cracks but have all the more character because of it.

The story, while basic, is well executed with the action and the film remains pacey throughout - there is a good balance between character dialogue and action and both complement each other in driving the story forward (i.e. it's not an endless sequence of gratuitous action scenes but neither does it slow to the extent that a younger audience disengages).

Highly recommended film, stunning colourful animation and great characters make this a must for kids and adults alike.
You've really gotta watch this in 3D though, the pop-out is some of the best there is and what really sets it apart.
