Seeking shelter from a storm, abandoned young cat Thunder sneaks into a mysterious mansion owned by retired magician Lawrence, aka "The Illustrious Lorenzo". Lawrence shares his fairy-tale world with many animals and a dazzling array of automatons and gizmos capable of whipping up breakfast while rolling out a spectacular song-and-dance routine. He soon makes Thunder feel welcome, but Jack the rabbit and Maggie the mouse start plotting to get him kicked out. When Lawrence ends up in the hospital, his nephew tries to trick him into selling the house. But its ragtag inhabitants develop a spooky strategy to defend their home. They turn their house into a haunted mansion, using Thunder as their secret weapon...

House of Magic may not have the backing of a big Hollywood studio but it is a very well animated family film with a fun but moral story and a very cute kitten at the centre of it. Whilst it may be not hit the heights of the Toy Story series or some of the DreamWorks or Blue Sky studios animations, it is still good fun for younger viewers....and people who like cats.
If there's a song to sum up this film: 'I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends.'
There was a lot of charm and warmth to this film mainly due to the character of the old magician who lives alone in a big spooky looking mansion, with his clockwork and automaton creatures a rabbit and a mouse, who are fiercely protective. It is visually stunning, exciting animation, utterly charming and very funny for all ages.
The body language of the cat is well observed and, like a YouTube cat clip, is entertaining to watch in itself. The other characters are also well thought out and reasonably developed - for example the magician comes across as a character who always thinks the best of people, the cranky old rabbit is genuinely cranky without being reduced to being a good guy or a bad guy, and the bizarre collection sentient enchanted contraptions that the magician has built add a different dimension - they don't talk or have facial expressions and don't attempt Christmas cracker grade American wise-cracks but have all the more character because of it.
The story, while basic, is well executed with the action and the film remains pacey throughout - there is a good balance between character dialogue and action and both complement each other in driving the story forward (i.e. it's not an endless sequence of gratuitous action scenes but neither does it slow to the extent that a younger audience disengages).
You've really gotta watch this in 3D though, the pop-out is some of the best there is and what really sets it apart.

I love 3d when it is used not only for depth but also to project off the screen - this one does both in excellent fashion. Read morePublished 27 days ago by wisdomstar
A real feel good movie for the whole family to watch together, providing they appreciate animated movies with a slightly predictable story line. Read morePublished 1 month ago by Jeff Clark
