Master of horror, Ti West, director of Cabin Fever 2, invites you to experience the most blood-curdling night of terror and suspense you have ever witnessed. Sam is a pretty college sophomore and so desperate to earn some cash for a deposit on an apartment that she accepts a babysitting job with the sinister Ulmans. But after discovering no baby exists in the household, Sam realises the Ulmans have lured her to their diabolical mansion deep in the woods. Left along in the house, something stirs in the rooms high above her. Outside, as a lunar eclipse begins, it soon becomes clear that she will end this night in a bloody fight for her life with whatever bone chilling horror is locked in the house with her. Acclaimed across the world as an unrelenting, unforgettable journey into the darkest realms of fear itself, The House Of The Devil will make you pray for the dawn.

I was lucky enough to have a dad who owned a chain of video stores in the eighties and have seen just about every horror film going (not sure I should confess to that!!) and for me, this film manages to capture the atmosphere and the creepiness of the films I watched in my teens. Okay.. it's not The Shining [DVD] , Halloween [DVD] or When A Stranger Calls [DVD].. but it does do a pretty good job of cranking up the tension, and it was the first film in a while that had me actually sitting on the edge of my seat.
If you're a fan of Hostel or any of the Saw sequels, then I recommend you give this one a miss. If, however, you're a fan of eighties movies such as Eyes of a Stranger [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC], ...Read more ›
House of the Devil will not be for everyone because the movie character builds, not much happens for a good hour, and yes it is very slow. Horror conssierus should have little trouble with this, but the me me me want want want generation will be aiming for the remote control. Movie isn't perfect of course but tension is built up well for some scary moments, though not as scary as the blurb on the DVD cover claims. You'll probably question some of the girls motives, why pry for instance?
Should also be noted that the acting is generally good, especially from babysitter's friend.
Obviously things aren't as they seem to be, just look at the title of movie- won't give anything else away. West has directed this quite brilliantly, there's only really one horrific gore scene and that's the only reason this is an 18 movie. Distributors really need to chill out, on the back of DVD cover it says there are flickering lights not good for epiletic people. Please have they ever seen IRREVERSIBLE? There is SLOW flickering for about 3 seconds.
The films does build up slowly, which to be honest makes it more watchable as you are not given anything too early, which can sometimes ruin films in my opinion. It adds to the mood and makes you want to keep watching. I also love the fact that you are not given too many characters either, which could otherwise ruin the type of community it is supposed to be set in. I think the two house owners are very well cast as both have a scary look about them, which makes the house even more creepier.
The suspense builds and then all of a sudden you are given the true identity of what lives in the house. Unlike the intro music the rest is much better and helps give a scary feel. I wont ruin it for you by telling you what happens, but in my opinion if you like classic horror films like Rosemary's Baby and films that build up tension you will love this. Loads better than the slasher style horror, which in my opinion is just gore for the sake of it. This is definitely a must for those of you who long for horror to be as it was back in those cult horror periods of the late 1970's and early 1980's.
This film deserves its place in the collection of true horror fans. Love it and can't wait to watch again. Turn the lights low and add to the atmosphere it creates for the best effect.
I really cant say too much without giving it away but the title gives you a little clue. I don't think I have felt so tense watching a film for so long! and the ending was also very good! I am looking forward to his latest offering the 'the Sacrament'
If you like your horror tense, with atmosphere which doesn't rely on gore then this is for you, please give it a go.
Its directors like Ti and Rob Zombie who are really pushing the boundaries of horror recently and I applaud them!!

Movie wasn't great but the disk came clean and without scratches. A few signs of wear on the DVD case but not anything noticeable. The end was good tho.Published 2 months ago by Kimberly Farrel
Bril - I didn't think they made them like that any more. Think 'Omen', think 'Rosemary's Baby'. Slow burner but all the better for it. Highly recommendedPublished 2 months ago by Amazon Customer
A strange, slow movie, with some interesting twists. A welcome break from some of the 'dumb' horror movies recently.Published 4 months ago by J-Lo
