The first thing that needs to be said about this toy is that it's really quite big and it's stuck to a wall with sticky pads that are tricky to remove (i.e. it's becomes kind of a permanent feature). So first thing you have to do is choose which wall this track will stay glued to for the foreseeable future and then take some time to clear some serious wall-space for it. Oh, and you also need four size 'D' batteries (i.e. those big old ones).
Next you have the mammoth task of making it up. Given how long it took, I would perhaps advise making it up first before giving it to younger children, as they may get a little bored with the wait. There are A LOT of different sections and pieces and you'll want to take your time while you set it up otherwise the cars are likely to come off the track or not flow around it as smoothly as they should. Anyway, to give you an idea of the size of the track once it's fully set up - it's approximately 3ft tall and perhaps a little wider - which is pretty darn big and impressive-looking to the eyes of a four-year-old.
Once set up though, I have to say it's well worth the hard work. Super-fast and super-fun, any child will enjoy how quick the car zooms round the track. It's pretty noisy, with the car hammering around the track at a blur of a speed and the motor that propels the cars humming away quite loudly. With multiple cars on the track it becomes a raucous clacking sound that (be warned) will drown out the tv quite easily.
One negative side to the set is that it only includes one Hot Wheels car. For such a large set that's ideal for multiple cars to 'chase' each other (especially with the 'short cut' feature), it's a real shame that the makers decided not to include a second car.
All in all we'd have to say that the set is pretty good. Our four-year-old son loves it, and has played with it (using multiple cars) on many occasions. Okay, so he doesn't seem to play with it for much longer than 10 - 15 minutes on each occasion these days (and often leaves the blasted thing running when he's left the room), but he does still keep returning to it time and time again. However - just to repeat the warning - it really is quite noisy!
My main comment is the cars mostly fall off and don't make it round the loops. That's even using the car supplied as Im sure many parents know hot wheels cars are a different weight to other same sized toy cars. I would say that's a major flaw but my son derives some pleasure from them falling off and the sound of the accelerator, hence 2 not 1 stars. Even so, in hindsight I wouldn't have bought it had I known.
The key thing to do when assembling is to ensure that when the track is slotted into each section it does not have any edges sticking out to the flow of the direction of the cars. If you slot them in incorrectly, then the edges flip the cars off the track. Something I only figured out after looking very very closely at the instructions and when my cars kept falling off.
Hot Wheels expect you to stick the 5 brackets to your wall. And it's a massive thing (over 3ft) so I built a wooden frame instead - as you can see in the video. It's an awkward thing if you have to fix where it goes. I ended up screwing the brackets to my frame because the adhesive strips weren't that great in my opinion.
It's very very fast. You do not want children putting their fingers in the way. Thankfully the motor spins a rubber wheel, so fingers will get grazed but not broken or cut if your child decides to investigate the motorised spinning wheel. You can select 2 paths for your cars (double loop or single loop), and force them to crash if you time it perfectly.
Entry to / from the loops is via a manual button press and I'd recommend you buy more track to get a lot of fun out of this.
Well made, seems to be built well and should last a while. You only get the single car, and notes that heavy metal cars won't work - they need to be very light and low profile.
My little boy loves it, although he's probably about 9 months too young for it.
Firstly, this set must have batteries, 4 x D cell batteries at that, in order for it to be of any use whatsoever. Without the batteries, it's just utterly pointless. Once installed, the battery life isn't fantastic.
The set up is not easy and I didn't read anywhere (maybe my fault granted) that it needs to be stuck to the wall to work and you need effectively about 4 feet plus space for it.
Once stuck to the wall, it will stay there for about 5 minutes of use before the sticky pads fail, I've had to replace them with heavy duty adhesive pads which are actually designed for GoPro cameras to be stuck to things and now seem to be ok.
The actual use is hit and miss very much dependant on the car and the freshness of the batteries and that you have it mounted exactly as it should be.
If the car is too heavy, the batteries lacking some oomph or the setup not exact, then the full effect of the set is diminished massively and it will be rare for the cars to complete full loops of the track.
All in all, I'm pretty disappointed with this, but maybe I should have done more research before buying it, but as I say, my son loves it.
