5.0 out of 5 stars The first of hopefully many Moss Cole novels 29 Jan. 2013
By Craig - Published on Amazon.com

Howerton manages to breathe new life into the neo-noir/gumshoe genre by not fixing what isn't broken. The hero, Moss Cole, is tough as nails, fights dirty, is a recovered alcoholic and is a bit of a brooder. However, he feels pangs for not seriously pursuing a career as a professional musician, and makes no effort to conceal his sensitive side. Howerton also gives us some unexpected characters in the form an openly gay couple that work as low level leg breakers for the mob (they're a real treat, and never do what I expected as a reader). Perhaps Howerton's greatest triumph is coming up with a fun, wickedly original MacGuffin for a detective novel: The titular 'Hot Sinatra', an illegal, one of a kind recording of a Sinatra performance in his prime that avid collectors would kill to get.

Snappy dialogue, fun characters and a no frills writing style made this a blast to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scratches the same itch as Raymond Chandler 9 July 2013
By Christine Garrison - Published on Amazon.com

I loved Hot Sinatra. It's been a long while since I've been so reluctant to put a book down. This is a real page turner, full of colorful characters (especially Danny, Manlove and Kickerdick), brutal fights, deadly danger, sexy encounters, and of course snappy hardboiled banter. Moss Cole is more than worthy to wear his Pops' battered old private dick hat. He takes a beating as bad as any Harry Dresden gets, except without magical healing powers. He feels like an old friend, a fine narrator and hero for the book.

Axel Howerton has made a book that will have you cheering and wincing and thrilling as the chase for the stolen Sinatra record escalates hotter and hotter, while Cole fights to keep his cool and protect people he cares about that are caught in the crossfire.

One of the most fun reads I've had in a year or more, I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe and the Big Lebowski. It's a rocking, bang-up good time!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Hot Romp! 8 Aug. 2013
By SarahM - Published on Amazon.com

I have to admit this first and foremost: I generally don't read detective novels. I don't have anything against them, but they're usually not my favorite genre. A friend suggested Hot Sinatra to me and after reading the description I thought I'd give it a try.

I didn't put it down until I finished it a few hours later.

I loved it! If you're sensitive to vulgarity, this might not be the book for you, but if you can look past that to the laugh-out-loud dialogue and descriptions then you're in for a treat! I'm not sure what to write because I want to give everything away! I REALLY enjoyed this book. I rarely step out of my favorite genre, but I'm glad I did. If you like classic detective movies (or novels), music, humor, a fun cast of characters, and a little bit of heart, than this book is for you. If you don't like those things? Try it anyway! Axel Howerton has another fan eagerly awaiting the next Moss Cole book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, sexy and brilliant! 6 Feb. 2013

Well Done! A fast paced, entertaining novel that will keep you engaged throughout. Cool as they come, flaws and all, Mossimo Cole is a awesome character and a sharp ladies man. I wanted to drink coffee, booze and listen to all the great musical references after finishing this. Howerton's prose is stylish, witty, and riveting. An OUTSTANDING debut for this author, and I want more Mossimo Cole. And booze. And hookers and coffee and...ummm this is why we read right ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars Noir Detective Does It Right 24 April 2013
By Robert E. Vardeman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
It's been a while since I read a PI hard boiled detective book that caught me up so completely. The usual cast of noir characters are here:cranky, maybe senile client (with a past), a crazy Mafia enforcer, Yakuza, the sweet young thing who is the light of the detective's life, drugs and Mexican cartels and all clash over a vinyl recording made by Frank Sinatra.

While it is definitely in the Philip Marlowe genre, HOT SINATRA also showed flashes of Burn Notice. Which is not a bad thing at all.
