Format: Paperback
The book is well presented and explains the operational procedures as well as some of the philosophy behind the tactics used by Counter Terrorist personnel around the world, the author is honest and explains clearly in the preface that tactics will always differ from country to country, Government to Government.
The diagrams and non-jargon explanations of single/multiple room clearing methods, Using a two or 5 man entry team, correct positioning of snipers and puts a great emphasis on the use of a Hostage Negotiator. The tactics mentioned in this book are better then most of the manuals I have studies, even tough they don’t go into to much depth they could be used as a foundation upon which you could further enhance or improve on.
The Author has set-out to explain how Counter Terrorist Operators carry out their duties and why it is becoming all the more necessary to try and pursue a non-lethal resolution to a barricaded or hostage scenario. The Author also goes on to use previous operations carried out by various Military and Police Special Operations and uses them as guide’s on what to and not to do. Among these are the world famous SAS embassy rescue and the Royal Dutch Marines Train &School Rescue Operation.
Overall I would give this book a Two Thumbs up… For being a no nonsense introductory guide into the workings of the worlds counter terrorist teams and their tactics, and would happily recommend that the layman buy this book before seeking out to buy the more cumbersome and boring US Army Field Manuals.

I liked the book. I really thought it covers the basics for HRT and I hope to see his executive protection book on Kindle soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Resurch Tool 27 Jun. 2012
By LtTora - Published on
Format: Paperback
Let's get something out of the way right now: This book is not a 'Secrets revealed' book, I have seen the negative reviews and would like to add my two cents, that contrary to popular belief terrorists are not stupid, the most effective and dangerous ones are very intelligent very bright people who are always looking for ways to undermine those whose job it is to deal with them. As a veteran and a writer I concede that this book leaves out the most sensitive details about Hostage Rescue and for good reason.

On with the real Review.
The Good:
+ Illustrations
+ reviews basic need to know elements
+ Gives examples
+ Touches on most aspects of Hostage Rescue
+ Gives information that isn't always obvious.

The Bad:
- Not all encompassing
- Gives no information on training methods

Overall: To all those people who whine about how this book leaves stuff out, either join a CT team and find out or shut up. There are very good reasons why no one has come out and exposed every single little detail on the subject. So if you're looking for a book that is going to tell you absolutely everything you could ever want to know about CT quite wasting your time, you're not gonna find one. If however you are just looking for a research tool (like I was) this is actually a pretty good guide, not perfect but as good as it's gonna get.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not more but a short overview 14 May 2003
By F. Jungmann - Published on
Format: Paperback
This book actually covers most topics concerning hostage rescue. It is well written and easy to read.
But it doesn't offer any details, just some short overview.
E.g. it deals with hostage negotiation for about 3 pages, whereas I got a professional book that has almost 300 pages just about this topic.
If you are a professional already, or if you will rely on many other sources of information, than you should consider buying this book in order to have a nice summary of all main topics.
But don't get the idea, this book alone will help you doing your job - it'll be lethal!
I personally am really disappointed and will send it back to amazon!!

3.0 out of 5 stars What to expect in a publicly available book 22 July 2007
By Matt S. - Published on
Format: Paperback
In a "manual" available to anyone, one cannot expect magic on the pages. This book covers the basics, which any operator knows, all advanced training IS mastery of the basics. No book, manual, video, or seminar makes one a super SWAT/SEAL/Ninja/Ranger/Sniper/HRT man. For a new team starting off, this is a decent manual to outline the realities and requirements for hostage rescue. Leroy Thompson has spent more time in the field than most operators have spent in service. I enjoy his articles and books and you should too.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hostage Rescue Manual- not really! 7 Dec. 2002
By Mike - Published on
Format: Paperback
Well I say like someone else "more of an outline than an actual manual" and that is true. If you looking for room entry-tactics, well then this is not the book. It show basic information of what is needed to do on a HRT operation but still not enough. It show veichle and bus takedown but only basic, and if you have read other books on the subject then you will problably know how to do this. Don't think you can start a HRT group after reading this. I learn some things but not worth buying the book for.
