Leading or working as part of a team always invoke the same gung-ho leadership metaphors - the sergeant of an army squad, the leader of a mountaineering expedition, captain of a sports team; all very physical things with lots of shouting and high stakes and always communicating on the move. Of course, those things may well apply when you're playing within a fairly well defined set of rules and roles (capture the airfield, climb the mountain, score more goals than the other lot). However increasingly we seem to be knowledge workers, highly dependent on other people that work along side us, in order to make things happen. Sometimes these teams grapple with "Wicked problems", i.e. difficult or impossible to solve because of incomplete, contradictory, and changing requirements that are often difficult to recognize. More diffuse goals like "increase engagement", "manage expectations", or "be innovative" don't lend themselves too well to the pointy-shouty mode of leadership.

In that context, McKergow & Bailey suggest a new way of framing leadership and teamwork, from "leader" to "host". Who is the best host you know? What makes them so special? What skills and techniques could you develop?

That's the opportunity offered by this book. As a host one has responsibilities right from the off about picking the perfect venue, writing warm and engaging invitations, setting the right ambience, welcoming guests, etc. but it's more about setting the scene for a good party to happen and moving from front-of-house to back-in-the-kitchen to make sure everything's working well. You can't host a party like you captain a football team, so why would we expect leaders in organizations to attempt the same model?

Through engaging writing, relatable case studies, and a useful framework that can be applied in working life, this is an outstanding read and a great reference for anyone in a leadership position. Highly recommended.

Thank you Mark and Helen for a wonderful, insightful and thoroughly inspiring book on the metaphor of Host as leader, Leader as host. I work as coordinating manager in the space between several organisations in the field of rehabilitation. In my work the ideas in this book on host leadership are particularly useful. For me hosting is found in everything: From organizing events, to introducing people to each other, to setting scenes where better conversations can arise and where joint efforts really can make a difference to people particularly vulnerable to when services don't work as well as they could. In all of this I have found the ideas expressed in this book very helpful. I remember getting so thrilled just by reading the contents page! The idea if the six roles of a host and the four positions got me very excited and curious. I love how the authors have found ways of breaking down the idea of host into different roles and positions. So original, clear and ground-breaking. The book is a thrilling read, I recommend it to anyone!

Like all the best metaphors, it's the simplicity of "Leader as host" that draws you in. Unlike many metaphors, which break down fairly rapidly, the more you explore it, the richer and more fertile it becomes. The combination of six roles and four positions gives a framework within which leaders can flex and adapt their style to meet the needs of their teams. This metaphor has implications that reach way beyond business leadership to sports, religious institutions, schools and parenting. Anyone who has to lead anyone in any context will benefit from this highly readable book.
