If two dimensional characters, that say things that bare no relation to the situation they are in and a general lack of thinking out a book is your thing, read this.
Not sure what the author was thinking apart from 'this will sound cool' or i 'have to fill the next chapter with something".
Like the thought that breaking a child's bones through training will make them mentally tough rather than emotional wrecks or when the two characters somehow find themselves in a situation where they could be murdered but still find time to get jealous that once in the past the hero looked at a girl. Oh really. O.k. going to die but... wait... he did what!
Nothing, i mean nothing made sense. One star. Never, ever, darken my door again with such drivle.

“The descriptive writing is gripping, the characters strongly drawn […] An intensive read.” Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Review Annual
Aldric Talvalin has had his family torn from him and is left for dead.
Seeking the care of an old wizard, Gemmel, he is nursed back to health. But as recompense, he has a particular mission in mind for the hero.
Alone, he ventures off through dangerous lands in discovery of the legendary Dragonwand, a powerful tool and weapon long sought after by Gemmel.
But he won’t be alone for long. With an unlikely companion, Aldric must battle onwards and affirm his destiny as the hero he is.
Trouble, danger, and even romance face Aldric on his perilous adventure.
And the question remains:
Will he succeed in his vengeful purpose?

I loved this book when I was a teenager and it has been great to rediscover it and read it again. Interesting culture and a bit different to other fantasy tales. In retrospect this book prompted me to take up both Japanese and European swordsmanship, which I have enjoyed for years.

I first read this book about 30 years ago. The mix of Celtic and Japanese culture still works as well today as it did then. There have been some minor changes to the book, but they are mostly improvements. The only disappointment is the removal of Peter's original artwork, which greatly enhanced the story.

This came as a nice surprise. I am pleased I got the next two volumes ready to hand. .
Edit; Feb 28 and I just completed reading volumes 2 and 3. These could have benefited from further proof
-reading, but the stories kept me interested enough to get to the end. At the price-point, four stars remain.

Well written and built on good foundations surrounding country and samurai references. But the action scenes feel lacking, they don't encourage the imagination. The final.confrontations were also very weak, being resolved too fast or easily.
Overall, personally dissapointed
