I've never read the Henry books myself, too old to read them myself first time around, and they've never appealed as an adult.
Now the parent of a school-aged son, he's asked to try one so I couldn't refuse. And I was keen to see what all the fuss was about.
We started with the very first book of Horrid Henry stories, a collection of four tales in one (we read two per bedtime, over two nights).
The characters settle quickly in your mind - the two very different brothers, Peter and Henry, their neighbour Margaret (each with an alliterative name denoting their personality). And we get to enjoy their young misadventures.
Henry is, like My Naughty Little Sister, a rather ordinary child in many ways (moans, refuses to do as he's told, makes a lot of noise), but manages to get into lots of trouble. Perfect Peter is a horrible little squirt, in my opinion for worse than his big brother - he's devious, sly, a little telltale and suck-up, and I loved that the first chapter was one in which Henry behaves angelically to bring his brother down, if only temporarily. I actually found it quite sad when their parents blamed Henry automatically for things that were being done by Peter.
Of course, I could see my son enjoying them for what they are - stories of mischief for children, an anti-hero struggling against authority. We both enjoyed the camping trip the most I think, and Henry and Margaret's cooking abomination. Very disgusting - just perfect.
Tony Ross is a good choice as illustrator, captures the children well.
I'm sure we'll be borrowing more in the series from the library, and I'm glad to now be at least partially acquainted with the characters, though I think I'll always prefer Just William.
For confident readers of 7 and above, or for listeners of 4-6.
called Henry who doesn't like going on holiday. Henry has a brother called
Perfect Peter. Moody Margaret has told Henry all about her holiday at the
camp and Henry is all happy. But when he gets there he isn't very happy at all. I think that everybody should read this book.
I would recommend this book to young boys and girls who want a short little story before bed.
I think this is an amazing book because he is very horrid, therefore he gets told off so many times.
Don't you like to be nice? Or are you always horrid?
This is the book for you!
