The multi award-winning series that revels in history’s most gruesome, bizarre, unpleasant, silly – but funniest moments.
From the Woeful World Wars, the Measly Middle Ages and the Savage Stone Age to Cut-throat Celts, Groovy Greeks, Rotten Romans, Vicious Vikings and Awful Egyptians, Horrible Histories celebrates the strange facts, rotten rulers, gory battles, crazy inventions and weird and wonderful stories from the past in sketches and songs.
“Horrible Histories isn't just the best show on children's television – it's one of the smartest comedies on TV” The Guardian
“We wish history had been taught like this in our day!” TV Times
“Full of outlandish and memorable facts.” Sunday Express
A lovely series this, based on a terrific series of books. Horrible Histories takes a gleeful look back at history, mixing in lots of unpleasant moments with many funny ones. It’s a recipe that shouldn’t work, but very much does. Aimed at youngsters, it presents an engaging, accessible and outlandish look at history.
You get the first three series in this collection, that takes you through the Middle Ages, wars, the Greeks, the Romans and the Vikings, and each is treated with due respect. But Horrible Histories, with its sketch-like approach, has a lot of fun with it all too. Frequently very funny indeed, whether you’re young or old, it’s educational and genuinely entertaining. That’s some balance that it manages to achieve, and yet the tone is pretty near perfect. Furthermore, it’s savvy enough to move onto the next topic quickly enough, so boredom or disinterest isn’t given the slightest chance to slip in.
The DVD set throws in some welcome and equally fun extra features, too. It’s a well-collated mix of outtakes, deleted material and quiz questions, with a few songs thrown in for good measure. And, coupled with the number of episodes you get--there is, after all, nearly 20 hours of Horrible Histories here--it proves to be a terrific all-round package. Heartily recommended.

I enjoy reading historical non-fiction as it is and I loved these DVDs because they have been able to direct my reading wonderfully - although the wish list and bank account are suffering from it ;)
The cast is brilliant, and it's good to know that the majority of them are continuing to work together on new projects such as Sky's Yonderland and a feature film based on the life of William Shakespeare.
If you like history and have a silly sense of humour, get this - you won't be disappointed!
One day, he'll be big enough to enjoy them as much as I do, even if it's only for the songs.
I'm in the endless list of people who'd love to send a CD/MP3 album of these songs to no 1 in the album charts.
I'm dreaming of the day when The HIghwayman song (Dick Turpin one based on Adam Ants "Prince Charming" or similar tops the charts.
Come on horrible histories, please give us what we want.
Or do a Horrible Science series to fill the gaping hole in my life now there are no new Horrible Histories to look forward to.
And anybody who loves to learn about history should watch this. This is not a show only for children, its a show for anybody between the age of 5 to 100.
Well I didnt until my 4 year old piped up. "Eh Daddy, Pachacuti was an ancient king of the Inca's. Everyone knows that"
My children - ages 4, 7 and 11 (nearly 12) would blow me out of the water in a History quiz - and I honoured History in School.
An amazing box set that has endless amounts of fun and endless amounts of learning.
A truly inspiring series that is now - enjoyed by the whole family.
The only problem with this review is that I cannot give it more than 5 stars...it's just that good.
Go get it!
