Wow-About time too Hornby!
Some time ago,the Spencer A4 was released a few years ago & to many's dismay,he didn't stick around for very long.
One batch hit UK shores & lasted a matter of weeks/months.Years later, this model's original release nearly fetched £200 on ebay before Christmas 2011! Lot of money for a child's toy really......
By Jan of this year(2012),we'd been informed Spencer was to be re-released,though this time it was considered only as a L/E restricted to about 1000.Somehow,the model even found itself being reduced to approx £65 in some outlets.
So how good a model is this Spencer? Well,if you own or have encountered a railroad A4 60022 Mallard, then you're most of the way to knowing how good.Spencer here is based on an A4 in the series, though only making brief appearances like the 9F Murdoch, but is a great model. It is slightly less accurate than Murdoch,in that it's a proper A4,whereas Spencer in the series has a slightly more upright, less streamlined front.Furthermore, there is another inaccuracy,as this model's wheels are black, unlike the series, where his wheels match the rest of him.Perhaps one good thing about this means that replacing a whole chassis if needed, doesn't mean having to repaint every wheelspoke!!
Inside, there is moulded, not painted detailing & he has a fairly cheerful overall look. One thing I noticed in decoration is the shade of grey differs very slightly from the first version. There is also an added inspection hatch present on this, but missing from the first & the handrailing along the boiler is now black, instead of metallic.
On the track,Spencer pulls as well as a Railroad A4(mainly cos it is just that),but there really is no competition between this & the rival Bachmann version, which is woefully poor in comparison.
