The story is about 35 year old Bonnie with a 15 year old teenage daughter Paige and abandoned by Henri, her French boyfriend, father of Paige who does a disappearing act two years earlier. She finds herself with a crush on Holden Finn - a famous boyband star and keeps writing letters which she tears up and throws away rather then post! In addition to that she works in a fruit and veg store where the delivery man, Max also has a thing for her. When Bonnie's daughter enters a competition and wins the chance to meet the boyband 'Every Which Way' and Holden Finn, Bonnie finds herself accompanying her daughter to meet them. What happens next is completely unexpected and we very much see the tables turned on Bonnie. Who'd have thought it?
From this point Bonnie's life and relationships start getting complicated and by the time she realizes her own mind and what and who she really wants she finds herself making sacrifices in order to keep her daughter Paige happy. Something any mother who puts her kids first would do naturally although its very frustrating for us readers who want to see her happy to read about ! It all comes right in the end thankfully but if i was Paige I'd be so over the moon that my mum was a hot babe with all this male attention ! :) and I think in the end Paige is.
Great first book from Tilly. Really looking forward to reading more from her.
Bonnie is obsessed with meeting (and dating) teen idol/singing sensation Holden Finn, and her plans to do so had me giggling like a school girl right from the off. Her relationship with her teenage daughter also leads to numerous laugh-out-loud one liners, especially concerning other family members.
The writing is also excellent and so easy to read - the book flows beautifully and will not let you go once it has its claws in to you. I think it should also be noted that the story asks quite an interesting thematic question: do our celebrity crushes distract from how we experience or imagine real life relationships?
Of course, the real spotlight will always be on the romance and comedy, and, in that sense as well, this book absolutely delivers!
Highly recommended to everyone! I can't wait to read more from Tilly Tennant!
Hopelessly Devoted to Holden Finn was probably one of the most anticipated novels of January '14... and rightly so. I absolutely loved it. Bonnie is a fresh, down to earth main character. A single mum holding on to a teenage crush trying to keep the peace with her - actual - teenage daughter and resisting a second chance at love.
Bonnie is not in a happy place. She has an annoying boss and a not so glamorous job, a demanding teenage daughter who's father left them two years ago and bills to pay. She's been lonely and struggles to accept that she deserves a second chance at love, and to trust men again. Accept of course, Holden Finn. Hot, sexy, young, ... and most of all unreachable and perfect. Or is he?
I loved how the scenario of meeting Holden Finn and the band was actually really plausible and I especially loved that real life didn't stop from happening because she met some "megastar". Bonnie is a very lovable character and you can't help hoping for a happy ending for her... and Paige; although there were times I wanted to shout at someone. New found respect for parents with teenage daughters - sorry mum and dad!
The story has some unexpected twists, is funny, romantic,... you won't be able to put it down. Absolutely brilliant read!
Hopelessly Devoted to Holden Finn is an easy read and one of those books that you are halfway through before you know it. I found it was fast paced and the action kept moving on, although my preference was definitely for the boyband element rather than the other aspects of the book. However, you certainly don't need to be a fangirl to appreciate this book. Although there is the 'celebrity lust' element, there is more to it than that- friendship, community and family. It was touching to read a book which delights in the unique bond between mother and daughter, both in Bonnie and Paige's and Bonnie and her mother Jeanie's relationships. The love between the females absolutely radiated from the page and gave me the warm and fuzzies. I also enjoyed the sense of struggle between being a responsible mother and being a person in their own right that both Bonnie and Jeanie have- something I am sure many Mums out there will appreciate!
This would be a great beach read or perfect for those lazy weekend mornings where you don't want to get out of bed. It is a sweet romantic comedy (think Richard Curtis film in novel format), charming and cute. I will definitely look out for more books by Tilly Tennant.
