We purchased this product when our Dyson "Animal" motor burned out and the cost of repair equalled the price of this replacement cleaner.
The product arrived within two days (9 Dec 2010). Unpacking was simple and it took just a couple of minutes to assemble the handle (two screws using flat blade screwdriver, otherwise the machine arrived fully assembled with bag in place.
I had read prior reviews so was expecting the machine to be noisy and it is. It is significantly more noisy that the Dyson it replaced. Impossible to have a converstaion with anyone whilst the machine is in operation.
The suction is powerful and picks up threads etc on carpets. We have no complaints with the efficiency of cleaning. We are more happy with the disposable bag arrangement than struggling to empty the bagless container on our Dyson. Whilst buying replacement bags may be more expensive in the long run, compared with the our prior bagless cleaner, this is easier and quicker; disposing of the dirt in the bag is less of a messy process.
The attachments all fit on the main body of the system and attaching them to the system hose (compared to using attachements on our Dyson) is a 200% plus improvement.
The biggest single negative is that supply cord is not really long enough for our use and we have to use an extension cord to increase the overall cord length. The supplied cord is 6m in length, but by the time the cord is plugged into the wall (we have high level socket outlets) the drape on the cord, plus an allowence to ensure there is no strain imposed on the socket outlet, reduces the effective length to just over 5m. Given the price of the machine, this is not a big deal, but I would suggest that if you purchase this machine you factor in the cost of a 2m extension lead.
Build quality. The machine does not seem as sturdy as our prior Dyson and the plastic body mouldings seem to be a lighter construction - on the other hand the Hoover is much lighter so there has to be trade off. No one is going to make suction cleaner with much lighter carbon-fibre body parts! On our machine the footswitch to allow the body to tilt backward is tempremental. Can't see what the problem is but at times the catch does not release and permit the body to tilt. This appears to be an intermittent problem on our machine. Also see update of 22 Feb 2011 below.
Summary: Given the low purchase price you get a lot of cleaner for your money but there is no such thing as a free lunch so be aware that you may need to accept some compromises if you have been used to a more expensive machine.
Plus points: Arrived (almost) fully assembled and ready to use - Powerful suction - light to carry - easy to use tools.
Minus points: Supply cord too short - build quality has a "plastic" feel about it.
22 February 2011: Update: After just over 2 and 1/2 months use, the drive belt went. The machine is not heavily used as we have three cleaners, so the Hoover just copes with the kitchen/lounge/dining room/study. I was quite amazed to experience a drive belt failure so soon. There was no apparent sign of wear and tear, the drive belt seems to have cleanly parted across its width. Drive belts are not covered in the warranty but I intend to push that with less than 3 months life this drive belt must have had a manufacturing defect. I will post the result of the replacement here in due course.
23 February 2011: Update: Contacted the Hoover warranty line at 9.30am, engineer arrived 2.30pm same day, replaced belt as a manufacturing defect confirming that normally drive belt is not covered by warranty but this was evidently a failure. Enginner fitted replacement belt, tested machine and all was completed within 1 hour. Our machine is fully functional once more!
