Unlike some of other reviewers, I never had any iphone, Galxy, or Motorola so am not comparing it with any of those.
I needed a smartphone with:
very good processor (so I can multi task comfortably), good battery life, good camera, light weight and stylish, dual sim, and within my budget, which Huawei offered it all, so I took a plunge and ordered one.
Got mine 3days ago, so far I am not disappointed at all, yes I feel the lack of apps, but am installing them as and when I need them.
I am not much into games.
I listen to music A LOT, so was worried about the sound quality, but I am not disappointed. I use my Sony SBH52 bluetooth with it & have downloaded Smart Volume Booster app, which combined makes it really good.
Camera is FAB.
Quadcore is OMG.
Light weight to use.
Bought tinxi screen for my piece of mind & fitted easily.
I use O2 provider with 4G, no problem.
I never heard of Huawei Honor before my order, but I am a total convert & highly recommend them.
I would certainly by Huawei again.
BATTERY IS ALSO NOT LASTING MUCH
The sound is fine for talk radio and sport but VERY tinny for music. It is BAD. Compared with a Moto G 2nd Gen it's lamentable. Do not buy it if you want pleasurable audio.
Also, the sound is not loud, especially watching BBC iplayer. There is a superb app called Speaker Boost which TRANSFORMS the volume capabilities of this phone. Be careful or you will ruin the speaker it goes so loud.
The battery, though big, is not as astounding as some people say. You still find yourself charging it quite a bit, primarily because getting it to a full charge takes a very long time.
As with other phones - do NOT get it wet! My phone works, takes calls, but screen is black after dropping in water so phone is in 'living dead mode'.
Using a Three Sim card 4G is fast and Google maps loads and locks onto satalites no problems .
Got a 32GB SD card in and set to default memory and with a 2 yr guarantee on top.
Overall recommend this phone to anyone
*****Original review below*******
I've been using this phone for a few days now and I think I'm happy with my purchase. It's not perfect in absolute terms, but for the price paid it is an absolute steal. Get one before they realise and put the price up! ;-)
In fact, everyone I've shown it to the last couple of days has vastly overestimated it's price - I've been explaining the specs to people and letting them see it in action, then asking how much do they reckon it cost me.... the average is about £300! Not bad at all. And strangely for a phone with a relatively low ppi value by todays 1080p (or higher) standards, the most frequent positive comments have been about the lovely looking screen :-)
So on to my review...
Screen (and body) - it does indeed look fantastic. I find the auto brightness keeps things a bit low (probably to conserve the battery) but leaving it around 60% keeps it looking more vibrant in most conditions and doesnt seem to hit the battery too much. 100% is very bright... retina scorchingly so. I would only consider going this bright under direct sunlight. At 5.5" I think I've also found my screen size sweet spot. The last two phones I've used were a Lumia 1320 at 6" which was fantastic but a bit unwieldy in the hand, and a Lumia 1020 at 4.5" which was a bit too small. But the Honor 4X for me (average sized hands) is just right and the phone doesn't feel like a massive slab. I actually find it easier to handle than the Lumia 1020 as it's quite thin with a lovely textured back that grips nicely. Also remember that having a 720p screen equals better battery life ... a trade off against slightly higher definition images that I'm happy with.
Performance - No stutter or lag experienced so far when using the phone. Menus, settings, opening/closing apps, switching between apps etc... all very fast - even with apps installed on my 32GB microSD card (samsung class 10). On that note for anyone worried by the low 8GB onboard ROM it's very easy to move apps to the SD card or even set the SD card as the default location to install and run apps in the settings.
Been playing a lot of Hearthstone since I got it so not tested many other games so far but I imagine only the very top tier of cpu/gpu intensive games would cause this phone to skip a frame or two. Also, signal strength and call quality are at least as high (slightly better perhaps) than my Lumia 1020, so very impressed by that :-)
Camera - I was in danger of slating the camera as early testing left me disappointed coming from a Lumia 1020... but that wouldn't be fair as the 41MP Pureview snapper on the 1020 is in a league all of it's own (808 pureview aside) . So keeping that in mind and comparing it to 'normal' cameraphones I'd say it's actually punching well above it's weight considering the price. I believe it's a 13MP Sony based camera but what's impressive is the lightweight yet deceptively simple camera app... It loads fast, focuses fast, and takes pretty decent pictures with vibrant but natural looking colours. The only complaints I had with the Lumia 1020 camera was that it could be pretty slow in use so sometimes you missed a shot, and it struggled with macro shots on occasion. On these two aspects the 4X actually beats the 1020, and although it can't compete on raw image quality against a 1020... it would easily hold it's own against certain other flagship phones costing 2, 3 or even 4 times as much imho.
Battery - most testing sites I looked at before purchasing this phone showed benchmarks indicating over 10 hours continuous screen on use... and although I've not been as scientific in my testing I believe they could be right. Even with 2 sims active (cellular radio use seems to be 2nd biggest battery drain after screen) I'm getting easily 2 days from a charge with varied use including playing some games, browsing, some video clips and a fair bit of camera work. I'd imagine a very light user would get a week out of a charge (perhaps even longer if only using 1 sim), and even a very heavy user should safely make it though a day without worrying about running out of juice :-)
NEGATIVES - the main reason I've docked 1 star and not given this phone a perfect 5/5 is that I was led to believe it had dual 4G sim support (and I knew before purchase that only 1 slot could be actively used for mobile data at a time)... but what I've discovered is that while both sims do support 4G, only one can operate in even 3G at a time. I discovered this when trying to use my 'Three' PAYG SIM (SIM1) at the same time as my 'Three' PREPAID DATA ONLY SIM (SIM2).... it just doesn't work :-( The reason being that with Three there is no 2G fallback, so when I set SIM2 to be the "4G enabled/mobile data" sim in settings, my voice/data (PAYG) sim goes out of service as the SIM1 slot goes into GSM only mode.... then when you set SIM1 to be the "4G/mobile data" sim my prepaid data sim goes out of service as you would expect. So if you want to use this phone's dual sim capabilites with [ANY network for mobile data use] and Three mobile as your non-data, voice/txt sim at the same time... then forget it. Using it with my Three mobile sim as my primary sim and a Virgin mobile sim in slot 2 for voice/txt works just fine though.
My only other reason for deducting a star is that they cut corners on the glass screen, which I believe isn't of the Gorilla variety... I know it's a budget/mid range phone but several other phones in this segment still have it so it's disappointing.
If these 2 negatives aren't dealbreakers for you then I say this... buy it, buy it NOW :-)
