Product Description

Product Description

The Honeywell HO-5500RE Oscillating Tower Fan with Remote and Timer has a practical and contemporary space saving design to cool your home in style. Air flow capacity can be controlled at three different settings to reach your desired level, this can be controlled by the easy to use control panel, or from across the room via the remote control. Should you want to change the setting because you are too hot, or too cold, you don't even have to leave the comfort of your chair should the remote be to hand.

A large oscillation function ensures evenly distributed air directed into various spaces across the room, and a gliding grill function means you get all the benefits of the oscillation function with out any safety concerns as motor housing remains stable and oscillation is internal. The timer allows you to programme the fan for up to 4 hours cooling so you are in control.

PROS: easy to assemble (three screws, no probs); remote control option; varying breeze speeds; light to carry/re-position - one-handed; 'night' option for gentle breeze (quieter I think?), although it stays in my living room so I won't use that option; silent oscillating action (other tall fans I've had shudder and creek when they oscillate!); value for money in my opinion.

CONS: the plug/cord length is shorter than I'd like, but nothing an extension lead didn't solve; if you're using it at night the blue 'on' light might be a nuisance, but you could always put a bit of tape or blu-tac etc. on it if it bothers you; the breeze isn't nearly as strong as other Honeywell fans I've had - the one in my bedroom is a small table top fan and the Tower Fan's highest speed is only as powerful as the tabletop's lowest speed. I have a large-ish living room, so I could've done with a bit more ooomf in the breeze(!), but it's certainly enough to stop me from melting in 35'C weather!

CONCLUSION: Great if you want a tall oscillating fan that's reasonably priced, light, quiet, and takes up hardly any space. Be prepared for (1) the breeze to be less powerful than a regular blade fan, (2) to use an extension lead if you need to, and (3) to cover the blue light at night with something safe e.g. black tape. Definitely a win for me!

I wanted a fan for the hot spells this summer, and wanted something relatively quiet that I could have on during the night. Cheap ones seemed to be extremely noise and of poor build quality, expensive ones were great, but £200+ for a fan just seemed obscene, so I chose this.

Purely as a fan, this is excellent, very powerful, great cooling effect. The oscillating function is good and quiet. The build quality is sturdy enough and the added remote control is great.

Where I think it's let down is by the different modes it has, which just seem superfluous. The night mode in partcilular is poorly thought out. It turns the fan on and off constantly, which I found even more difficult to sleep with. Also, you'd think night mode would turn off the super bright LEDs, but no, it turns another one on!

Just leave the fan on low, which is quiet enough to sleep with (but not whisper quiet by any stretch) and put some gaffa tape over the LEDs!

I had the cheaper/smaller Honeywell (HO-1100RE) before which lasted for a few years, once it broke I paid a bit more and got this tower which is great - really tall (103cm), looks expensive, and works really great - not too loud - in fact on the lower settings quite a relaxing noise !

I've bought a couple of similar tower fans before and still have one of them. This one feels is much better made. It's weightier than the others and the plastic seems less cheap. Same goes for the remote. The base is also solid, with metal plates.
It's very stable, and this won't change because only the grill "glides" (oscillates), not the whole fan unit. The whole unit can also be swiveled on its base, so you don't have to pick it up to rotate it and so on.

Noise levels are fine. At the lowest setting, with a window open, it's barely audible.

One of the other tower fans (Homebase/Challenge) has only one superior feature: more timer options, instead of just 1/2/3/4. Other than that, it's great.

For me the LEDs are not too bright and they're actually helpful, but it's in my living room. For the bedroom, I'd recommend LightDims

Wow wow wow this is an amazing product and has exceeded my expectations. Honestly I have bought many cooling products in the past but this by far is the best. Feels almost like the breeze you get from a good a/c. Doesn't just mask the mugginess but it actually cools the air in the room and makes it comfortable. Only downside is It is slightly noisy to sleep on with.

I bought this to replace a cheap Argos Challenger fan. The 5500 is twice the price, but 4 times the quality in my opinion. The remote control works well and has a great self storage location on the back of the unit. The oscillation works very well, and is a good height. I will buy another for the bedroom.

It IS tall for a tower fan, certainly the tallest one I've ever owned. That said, when compared to a pedestal fan its footprint is reasonable (only around 12"), and actually it's probably the same height as a pedestal. It's just a bit of a shock when you first see it! In my opinion, height is just what's missing from smaller units, because unless you sit / sleep on the floor, you don't want the breeze blowing around your feet. You want it blowing over your body, and these are the right height for armchair and bed.

I bought two of these, one for the lounge and one for the bedroom. In both locations, noise level is of some importance and I'm happy to report that these are fairly silent, even when oscillating, which is a top issue for me, as every other tower fan I've used made noises when swivelling. The middle speed is just about OK vs sound from my TV set up, but the highest speed will definitely have you reaching for the TV remote and volume adjustment.

I'm not interested in the timer feature -- it will only run for up to four hours, not a whole night anyway -- and the breeze and nighttime modes are of no use to me as the change in noise / wind level I find a distraction. But as with the lounge arrangement, I find I can cope with even the highest fan speed noise and still sleep.

The only negative is the ridiculous blue LEDs that manufacturers seem to believe that every consumer wants. I put yellow insulation tape over blue LEDs, which results in a pleasantly reserved green glow.

I've no idea how long these will last and given that it's almost September, they will be going up in the attic for the winter soon, but they "feel" well made and I'm hopeful they will serve me well for a few years. I'd recommend to a friend.
