The vet suggested that we keep his diet as close to "natural" as possible, since he most likely has food allergies. We started feeding him Gerber baby food (plain chicken in gravy) and sardines at his suggestion, which worked very well for a while. I started to worry about the vitamins that were probably lacking in both of those though (since taurine and several other vitamins and minerals get destroyed when meat is cooked at high temperatures)... so I started investigating cat food again.
We came across Honest Kitchen while browsing through Amazon. We had never tried dehydrated cat food before, and since it's not cooked first, the nutrients are preserved. I read a lot of good reviews, so we thought that we'd give it a try. A few people have said that their cats didn't like this food. My cat disagrees with that. He LOVES this food, more than anything we've ever fed him. He even prefers it to sardines or cat treats. From the very first bowl, he was licking his lips, pacing across the floor and standing on our legs howling in anticipation. Whenever we give him his bowl of food, his whole face disappears for about two minutes before finally emerging with food all over his nose (and sometimes the top of his head).
He has never gotten sick from this food, even after eating it exclusively for the past six months or so (that in itself is a miracle). That would have been enough for us, but he's actually had some unexpected benefits from eating this food. His fuzzy coat (Cornish Rex cats only have a downy fuzz on their bodies... their outer two layers of fur are missing) has actually been growing in thicker and curlier, and so have his whiskers. His eyes also look much brighter now. His coat even has a beautiful sheen to it that wasn't there before. He's also been getting more muscular, and his energy level is just unbelievable now. He goes and goes, taking little "power naps" throughout the day, before finally crashing at night. He just looks so happy and healthy now.
He's a beautiful little cat, and I'm glad that he's finally healthy. He is the picture of health now, actually! He also doesn't get sick like he used to. He used to go to the vet about every 1-2 months, as he would get respiratory infections and diarrhea periodically. He hasn't been sick in 4-5 months, at least. We can't even believe it.
I know that I've gone on and on in this review (and if you're still reading this, I apologize for being wordy!)... but we simply can't thank Honest Kitchen enough for what their food has done for our cat!!! I mean that!!! It has changed his life in immeasurable ways. This is a GREAT food, and if your cat has any kind of allergy/digestive problems, it is most definitely worth a shot. Even if your cat is totally healthy, this will probably make them even healthier. And this food is actually cheaper than a lot of the "fancy" cat food out there.
I'm attaching some photos of Giles. The first two are "before"... and the rest are "after". You can clearly see that he's gained weight and looks much better overall.
Thank you, Honest Kitchen!!! Giles thanks you, too!
Now I will preface by stating that I was going through about 10 cans a day of a variety of brands, flavors, etc. before purchasing this brand of cat food. As my cat became extremely finicky while I was trying to nurse him back to good health so it was a continual hit and miss. Also, a while back I saw a Shark Tank episode that showcased a veterinarian whose cat food line (Cornucopia) along with a super food supplement had eradicated diseases in cats and dogs and those that are on that food live to be about 28 years old...dogs can extend their lives by double and basically the cats and dogs live very healthy lives. I actually talked to him personally when I had called the company to order food. The downside is the food is very expensive. But, he also explained in detail how toxic regular cat food is and is why our pets have health issues, etc. There was one woman that had 62 cats (must be a shelter of sorts) that was spending regularly $1,000 dollars on veterinarian bills a month and since using the Cornucopia food she is literally saving $1,000 in veterinarian bills a month and still is. Which all this lead me searching out a non-toxic cat food which lead me to the Honest Kitchen as well.
The Cornucopia food is along the same lines as this food, but it is not a powder formula and does not have potatoes and cranberries in it like this does. But in general they are the same, non GMO, Antibiotic Free, Organic, Free Range, Wild Caught, No Preservatives, etc...
It was explained to me by Cornucopia that the reason my cat was loosing so much weight as he got older was that he wasn't getting a high quality protein as cats would get if it was eating out in the wild...so basically his body is eating itself which is why the weight loss at his age. Scary thought.
So, I am feeding my 20 year old cat The Honest Kitchen - Turkey Recipe occasionally throughout the day and then also feeding him Cornucopia with the super foods supplement and in less than a week the cat is visibly healthier and is gaining weight. I see a complete shift in his overall health. I am told it will probably take him 90 days to see a major change.
He does eat the Honest Kitchen Turkey Recipe (I have not tried the other recipe as of yet). I have better success with the Honest Kitchen then I did with the random brands and flavors of can cat food. He will eat Honest Kitchen on his own and sometimes I have to mix in a little tuna. It does help to use hot water than just water at room temperature. It is not his favorite, but also the way that Cornucopia explain it to me is that the veterinarian said that in the ingredients of most commercial brand and prescription cat food the statement of "natural flavors" actually contains sugar, etc.. and entices the cat to want to eat it, even if it is not healthy for the cat.
So, switching the cat to this type of cat food is a process like it would be from a commercial brand to a prescription brand. But, it is what is best for the cat. I do not know if he would like the Chicken Recipe better. I am attempted to try it. Though out of the Cornucopia Cat Food he loves the Turkey and Giblets flavor so not sure how he will respond to the Honest Kitchen Chicken Recipe.
My other four cats have tasted the Honest Kitchen Recipe. One of my cats who will eat anything in sight doesn't seem to care for the Honest Kitchen Turkey Recipe at all, but he is still on commercial brand ProPlan so that is probably the issue as I am in the process of switching all of my cats to a more organic cat food, but the 20 year old that was near death was my priority at the moment. Out of the five cats I would say three would eat this automatically on their own.
But, what I have noticed is after continual consumption the cat will get used to the food and want to eat it. You just have to be persistent, but it will pay off in the long run. So, it won't be easy at first, but just keep at it.
Their coats are beautiful now, ears are clean, and the litter box hardly smells! The skinny, picky one put on some weight and the chubby one has slimmed down. I mix it with warm water and they seem to prefer it runny. I mix in probiotic drops and only feed them twice a day. The dry stuff left them constantly hungry and thirsty. Stick with it! Your cats will love it! And the no more hair balls and the litter box doesn't stink as much either!
