About the Author

Luke Walker was born in Cambridgeshire in 1977. He grew up reading his brother's collection of James Herbert paperbacks, his dad's Stephen King collection and various editions of the Pan Book of Horror which some might say shaped him into the man he is today. Now 38, he has been writing horror novels and short stories for as long as he can remember. After leaving school witha tiny handful of qualifications and a deep love of books, Luke works full time in a library. He has also had a job as a hospital orderly and can say with some confidence that a severed leg in a biowaste bag is surprisingly heavy.Luke lives with his wife, two cats and more horror films than he knows what to do with.

Horror usually isn't my first choice, but I fancied a change to crime & thrillers, and was recommended the author by a friend. Frankly, I'd had enough tales of dysfunctional policemen with drink and family issues, so I plumped for Hometown, by Luke Walker. I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and it took me right back to tales I had read as a youth, and I'd forgotten how much I'd enjoyed them. It''s a 'pull you right in' horror story that's very well written. I'll check what else the author has to offer, and this comes highly recommended. Very spooky, full on proper horror. Five stars. A cracking read.

"Chilling horror that keeps you turning the page"

That is the tag line that persuaded me to give this book a go.
There is some truth in the claim, yes I did keep turning the page, but only because I wanted it to end. The story drags and by chapter 60 (or whatever it was, I forget zzzz) you find yourself thinking 'oh no, not this AGAIN'. By chapter 81 I had completely given up on ever finishing the book. While there are some elements in the book which could be classed as chilling horror they are executed in a way that just starts to bore you after a while.

I love brilliantly written horror fiction & this latest offering from British author Luke Walker is just that. The characters are well developed and the links between all of the characters flow very well. It's very to read & to get into straightaway. It's a page turner from early on and my first 'tingling arm hair raise' was within the first 30 pages.

All in all, a really brilliant horror story & I can't wait for the authors next fictional offering.

Format: Paperback
Hometown is a great read for those of us who enjoy atmospheric horror with in-depth characterization. The main characters are pulled into a strange parallel world where the sun never shines. Everything they remember is there, but nothing is the same, and it's a dangerous, unpredictable place that gets more dangerous and unpredictable every page. Each character is unique and likable in different ways, and they each must face their own demons -- internal ones and literal ones.

The concept is clever and well developed. The pace is fast but not too fast. The characterization is deep but not exhausting. The answers are always elusive, just as they should be, until the end. The writing is skillful and a pleasure to read.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel.

Hometown brilliantly evokes a British town with its nightmarish dark side. As someone who lived in a town just like this and is roughly the same age as the characters I felt like I recognised so much of the setting and so many of the characters. The pace is fast and terrifying - it would have been unputdownable except for the fact I felt that I had to stop at one point or I would have some kind of book induced heart attack. Great stuff.
