Product Description

The group It Bites was Francis Dunnery’s passport into London and to a record company deal back in 1985. The band’s weird time signatures and lack of visual artifice were the antithesis of the preceeding years of make-up and confused sexuality.

The band had a hit with almost their first single "Calling All The Heroes" and spent the next 4 years trying to rid themselves of the millstone it had become. The debut album "Big Lad in the Windmill" was followed by "Once Around The World (1988) and the epic "Eat Me In St Louis" (1989) and the posthumous live album when the band split "Thank You and Goodnight".

Francis retreated to the USA where he toiled producing a debut solo album "Welcome To The Wild Country" which only saw the light of day in Japan.

Dropped by Virgin, Francis took stock of his life and utilised his superb guitar skills playing back-up for many well known artists. It was while playing guitar for Robert Plant that he was spotted by Plant’s manager Bill Curbishley who quickly recognised his songwriting talents. Four solo album’s later, Francis has managed to use his unique guitar talents to good effect on such diverse releases as Lauren Hill’s "Miseducation of Lauren Hill" and the multi-platinum rebirth of Santana with "Supernatural".

Francis discovered in 2000 that his gigs were selling out and he returned with a bigger tour that autumn. The songs that had been swirling around in his head for the last four years finally found substance when he completed the recording of his new album "Man" which was only available mail order and at gigs.

Francis describes this album as, "…a collection of songs that I wrote during a turbulent period of my life. They describe the lonely transition that we all must make from the final chapters of youth into full psychological adulthood. After fulfilling the accomplishments of my youth I am now able to present to the world Francis Dunnery, MAN".

No matter how many times I listen to this it still sounds great!
I got my 1st copy of this from a random stranger I met when forced to spend the night in a airport. Since then I have gone on to buy all the other Francis Dunnery albums available but this is still my favourite.
Great stuff!

HASH(0x8aabdd08) out of 5 stars Francis unplugged 19 Oct. 2003
By eveoflove - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Made in UK in 2001, Serial# AN-002, Playing Time 69:23
Recorded at Whitehaven Civic Hall, Cumbria, England on July 14, 2001. The songs are performed by Francis on vocals and acoustic guitar, along with Matthew Pegg on bass; no keyboards, no drums.
The comparison with Peter Gabriel's voice is inevitable; Francis' voice that night was in good shape, and it's interesting to hear acoustic renditions of all that material. 5 songs were first recorded on his previous studio effort,
"Man", which was already very soft; but other tracks, especially the 4 that came from "Tall Blonde Helicopter", are shown in a new and pleasant light.
The setting is very intimate, and the presence of the audience can generally only be heard between the songs.
An enjoyable listening experience, particularly if you enjoy the folk-troubadour aspect of this gifted songwriter.
