A detailed an excellent book of Birmingham, past and present The photographs are stark reminders of how squalid, unhealthy, and ugly an industrial city could become by haphazard planning and indifference to peoples welfare and living conditions. The City Council's huge attempts to redress the squalor that many of its unfortunate citizens faced. This was, and is, an epic task that produced both successes and failures. I was researching my Birmingham origins, and found this book an invaluable aid towards that end. Carl Chinn has produced one hell of a book.
