I first met Homer on Facebook and was captivated by his story, so I bought a copy (had to send to Amazon US for it!) I sat and read and read, and could not put it down. Alternately laughing and crying as I read about this wonderful, and brave cat and his mistress Gwen. This is a MUST read for all cat lovers, and non cat lovers too, as it's message is truly inspiring! Homer did not give up, nor did Gwen, and neither should we! A true lesson in life.
Bless your heart Homer, and thank you Gwen for letting us share you and Homer's heartwarming story! (not to mention your other furry friends too!)

Homer was a little black kitten, abandoned and suffering from an eye infection, when he was handed into a vet's office. Instead of euthanising the kitten, the vet made the decision to remove Homer's eyes in order to save his life and then put out the word that a blind kitten needed a home.

Enter Gwen Cooper, a woman with two cats, dealing with a breakup and who definitely had no room in her life for a blind kitten, that is, until she held Homer in her arms and realised that this little kitten had a huge capacity for joy and love.

Homer's story is nothing short of amazing and is truly endearing. It's not surprising that a cat could adapt quickly to a loss of eyesight, but what is surprising is the joy and faith that this cat had in life and people. Even more important is the effect that this fantastic personality had on the author. The book is part Homer's tale and part memoir. Being responsible for the care of a blind kitten leaves Cooper facing tough decisions. She changes career, moves out on her own eventually moving to New York and finding the love of her life. Throughout it all, Homer provides her with inspiration and teaches her (unintended) lessons about living life.

Scenes such as Homer's obsession with elastic bands, his dual with a burglar and Cooper's frantic efforts to resuce her pets following the aftermath of 9/11 will leave you both laughing and tense. Cooper has a gift for bringing a tale to life. Additional cutesie material is present in the form of little thumbnail images that adorn the start of each chapter.

Any animal lover will adore this tale of a heroic and happy cat, while the tale of Cooper's personal growth and her subsequent marriage provides additional depth. Well recommended reading.

I have just returned from a Christmas/New Year holiday in Los Angeles. Whilst there I bought a copy of this book and was about halfway through when I left to return home. Somewhere between LA and here the book disappeared so have just ordered a replacement from Amazon so that I can finish reading the story. It's a wonderful book and the tenacity with which this little creature deals with his handicap makes you feel very humble. It's also a reminder of how much joy animals bring into our lives. Well worth reading, I can't recommend it highly enough. If someone finds my original copy, I hope it will give them the same pleasure as it did me.

What an excellent book! As someone who has quite a few critters, including cats, I could relate soooo much to what Gwen wrote, and her feelings towards her cats. The book had me in stitches many a time, and I loved how Gwen wrote from the cat's perspective at times! So true! She writes very well, and the flow was brilliant. The book had me hooked from the off, and I could not put it down!
All the elements brought into the story, such as the three cats, Homer's 'unique' ability, the events of 911, and her finally meeting Mr. Right all flowed perfectly.
I highly recommend this read to both cat lovers and non-cat people! I'm just sad I've finished it.
Go Homer! It's nice to know there are other suckers out there who take on 'special' animals!

What a great story - Homer was unfortunate to lose his sight so early in his life, but this account tells of his determination to live a fulfilling life despite his disability. Having a devoted owner obviously helps, as I have a cat who only has one eye - but he defied the odds and nothing whatsoever phased him - in fact I don't think he even realises he is blind. Even the terror of being stranded by the 911 disaster in his apartment for 2-3 days didn't affect his appetite for life. A great read, and a must for any cat/animal lover.

I'd never heard of Homer or the book until I saw it recommended on a social networking site. Something drew me to it and I felt that I must read it. (I'm a big fan of all things feline at the best of times.) What a wonderful story and so well told. I couldn't wait to park my bottom on the train for my commute home from work each day so that I could continue reading. I wanted to get to the end yet I also didn't want the story to end. I could feel all the emotions of the writer and imagine being on the journey of her and all of her cats. Just as well that my face was facing downwards to read the book as at times any other passengers observing me would have seen me suddenly smile and almost laugh and then a few pages later have moist eyes. The book has now been passed to my husband and, from his comments so far, I think he would also give it 5 stars.
