The key to transitioning to home-made products is to realize that the "stuff" in commercial products which is harmful to us and the environment has NOTHING to do with cleaning. It's preservatives that manufacturers use so that they can make large quantities of their product and ship it and have it sit on store shelves for months. Can't blame them for that. A business stays in business by maximizing profit. But understand that phosphates (and other harmful ingredients) are there for the manufacturer's benefit, not yours!
There is a lot available on the internet now on this subject and some is good and some isn't. Some of these recipes are ones I'm already using and I can testify to their effectiveness. Some are new to me. Her dish detergent formula (for hand washing) is the best I've ever tried. All of her ingredients are readily available and cheap. Zote soap is new to me and I definitely want to try it. I was also happy to see a borax-free laundry formula. I use borax and have no problem with it, but some people prefer not to use it.
I've read extensively on this subject and this book is GOOD.
Stinky stuff like Spray & Wash and scented dryer sheets give me headaches, and the au naturel stuff can be heinously expensive and can still be overly scented (yes, there is such a thing as too much lavender or lemon, even if it's labeled as real). If you are like the author and her DH and need to get away from all the artificially scented stuff because it makes you sick then you'll be willing to spend a little extra time making your own cleaning products. And you will save money in the long run. I got it as a special but knowing what I know now I'd pay full price for it as it'll pay for itself in short order. Get this book!
I am going to try the laundry solution because don't like the idea of wearing all the chemicals in commercial laundry products. I also suspect that I will save a lot of money not using these products. I am amazed to hear these recipes require a lot less volume of detergent, naturally soften the fabric, and result in less lint in the dryer.
Thanks for a great book in an easy to read and understand format! I found it fascinating, and would recommend it to anyone suffering from allergies. I am so sick of allergy medicines and the constant take an additional chemical to avoid the effect of another chemical solutions they offer. The solution may be in this book and it involves removing from the chemical cocktails rather than adding to them! Great book, great read, five solid stars!
