One of the main story arch's, the growing relationship between Gary, the protagonist, and Anne was destroyed by juvenile dialogue and contrived banter. I, as a reader, was never able to make a connection to the growing relationship, it was much like watching 2 Jr. High kids passing, "do you like me? Check yes or no," letters during class. Suffice to say that the character of Anne was so poorly written that I kept reading just hoping she would suffer her demise or at the least if she "stuck her tongue out," one more time someone would cut the damn thing off!
Plot holes were another issue. The problem with them is that when they aren't filled you spend much of the time reading a story looking for the answers and when they aren't forthcoming you lose focus on the overall story attempting to be told. The "why" of how victims were chosen was addressed but the "how" never was. Don't want to give spoilers but random phone calls? How was it determined someone would receive these calls? Why is Gary a natural born Templar? How does a random person become protected? Are Demons different than Fallen Angels and if so where did they come from and why are they in opposition to the Creator? All things hinted at but never fleshed out, several pages of campy dialogue between Gary and Anne could have been used to answer these questions. I understand some of this was done to leave room for future novels to answer these questions, yet one must understand that by doing that you run the risk of the reader becoming disinterested and not developing a connection to the world of the novel and thus not wanting to buy anything in the future.
There were some things that I thought were well done also. The character of Gary was fleshed out pretty well. As a reader I did make some connection with him and found his strengths and vulnerabilities adequate enough to keep me interested, his reliance on the, "I'm a Marine, Semper Fi, do or die, hoorah, hoorah," was campy but didn't detract from the overall character.
The vamps were well done and evil enough to make one want to boo and hiss when they came on stage, though I did keep asking myself why the female, who was at least 600 years old, could be that stupid and mistake prone, it's alluded that she's smarter and more clever than she seems but her actions were continually that of a petulant child. This dichotomy was intended, from reading the background, it was just poorly done; the dialogue between the 2 was more appropriate and gave a much deeper understanding and insight into their relationship than Gary and Anne's ever did.
The Grammar and spelling were really quite good. I saw that this book was totally self published using Kindle publishing, that is usually a recipe for a book so poorly edited that it becomes unreadable, didn't happen here, I do appreciate the author taking the time to get that part right, some formatting and comma mistakes with the odd misspelling, easily overcome, made the reading easy.
Overall, for the price structure, I would say the book is worth reading and would buy the next in the series.
