No preface, background, or contextual information is offered to frame the text and assist the reader with an understanding of the meaning of the text.
The translation, which might have been an attempt to be literally faithful, is awkward and unwieldy. Some passages read like machine translation.
The text is RIDDLED with typographical errors.
My subjective impression was that the text was run through a translator, and then published without being proofread. With no editorial or translation credits in the book, this might be entirely possible.
This seems like the kind of "throwaway" pocket book you'd pick up in the university book store as a requirement for your course on Japanese studies.
If you're interested in reading the Kojiki, find another edition. This one is not worth the price.
BUT at a mere 70 or so pages, this clearly does not contain the complete text of the Kojiki since the other Translation has over 300 pages.
I can find nowhere on Amazon that this text is shortened, nor in the book itself.. and yet it is impossible to condense 300 pages into the 44 pages which contain the text of the Kojiki in this book. I do not recommend buying it if you are looking for the full text, only if you want a brief, and i mean very brief, overview of the actual text.
