Product Description
Gustav Holst The Planets, Suite for Large Orchestra Op.32 (1913) version for four hands at one piano by the composer with Nora Day and Vally Lasker, edited by John York and Fiona York
Review
It's amazing. It's really amazing, what they do here. The four-hand transcriptions not even two-piano! -do not sound derivative. They attain their own independent musical value. This is one of those performances that justify the existence of four-hand piano transcriptions of orchestral music. --musicweb-international.com

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 February 2012The Planets suite that most people are familiar with is played on a very large orchestra so to reduce all that to two pianos and to still keep the essence of the suite was quite an achievement by Holst.
This arrangement takes it a step further and has two pianists at the same piano!
"York2" apparently found this lost version as they work in the music department at the same school that Holst did.
The playing is beautiful and, for me at least, some of the planets notably Jupiter and Saturn sound at least as good stripped down to basics as they do on the several orchestral CDs I have of this suite.
One thing to note is that I bought the CD as an Import and it doesn't play in my Technics hifi which could possibly be a sign that the CD pressing was made on a CDR rather than a standard audio CD, CDRs never play on my hifi but i've never had a problem with a commercially bought CD previously.
If you've got a fussy CD player you may have the same issue.

Good performance but a bit lacking in expressive power. The two-piano version is always
interesting in comparison with the original orchestral version, but I still prefer the latter.

I love this version of the Planets. It amazes me that four hands on a single piano can all but duplicate a large orchestra. Prepare to be amazed by the ultimate trip into space!
