About the Author

Mary Stewart was one of the 20th century's bestselling and best-loved novelists. She was born in Sunderland, County Durham in 1916, but lived for most of her life in Scotland, a source of much inspiration for her writing. Her first novel, Madam, Will You Talk? was published in 1955 and marked the beginning of a long and acclaimed writing career. In 1971 she was awarded the International PEN Association's Frederick Niven Prize for The Crystal Cave, and in 1974 the Scottish Arts Council Award for one of her children's books, Ludo and the Star Horse. This beautiful, compelling and totally absorbing book is part of the trilogy which I have had since the 1970s, and re-read at regular intervals. Because my old paperbacks are now getting dangerously tatty I have downloaded the books onto my Kindle, and am once again completely immersed in Mary Stewart's superb prose and wonderful imagination. If I had to choose books for a desert island, it would be this trilogy. It still holds me spell-bound, makes me laugh and makes me cry. It is timeless and never dates, and my daughter has the complete set in her collection as well. Myth, legend, belief, magic, faith and wonderful storytelling all combine to make this trilogy the best of the Arthurian legends. I have only one problem with the Kindle version - it is such a shame that the sub-editing is poor; time and again in the middle of a wondrously moving passage of prose I have been brought up short by an unnecessary typo (twice I've even had to refer to my paperbacks to find out what it should have said). This is really not acceptable, and it is high time that Kindle books were subject to the same rigorous editing as paper volumes.

Rereading this from many years ago. I was a trilogy that stayed with me from then and it still,leaves me with a feeling that if it is not true then it should be! The characters are beautifully drawn and the settings are so well realised that I had a longing to go to Carmarthen for many years. Although the story is extremely well known the journey to the conclusion is still one worth taking and does not stop you caring about the outcomes for various characters. Do read it.

A proper page turner, unable to put it down and read it in two days, between walking the dog!! Would recommend this book to anyone interested in old myths and legends.

A lovely read, real escapism. I was motivated to buy these books after reading the Times obituary of the writer, Mary Stewart. I thought I'd left King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table behind me in childhood, but these three books, starting with The Crystal Cave, were a delightful and refreshing change from the miserabilist contemporary novels that I avoid as far as possible. These books chronicle the life of Merlin, and the writing is very good. Stewart conjures up a convincing image of life in Britain in the Dark Ages, and I recommend this trilogy.

This is a beautifully written book, evocative of the era, and full of the confusion of ideas and beliefs that resulted in the stories about Arthur, all seen from Merlin's perspective. It is very moving at times, and gloriously tells of the birth and coming of age of young Arthur, to be the High King who united Britain and brought peace and chivalry into being.

This is the second part of the Merlin trilogy by Stewart. The books are amongst the very best books based on the Arthurian legends. This volume just gets better and better as it goes along. The final third is really exciting in the way the story is told as Merlin reveal Arthur's true identity to himself and Uther's scheming nobles. Captures a strong sense of the mystical in her prose. Strongly recommended.
