The warm way in which he writes about his patients and the descriptive passages telling us of his pleasure in visiting new and exciting places makes the reader feel as if they are along for the ride. I shall certainly feel more confident when taking a holiday knowing that someone like him may be dispatched to help me home should things go awry. The firm that he works for are a jolly friendly lot with sympathy and friendship in spades.
A life affirming book that deserves to be reprinted or even made into a tv programme!
Considering the book can be a little gory at times (thank goodness it has no pictures), it is also a touching, insightful and very funny introduction into the ins and outs of getting people home. Throughout he meets an interesting cross-section of the human race, from teenage drug mules, to middle-aged married men who accidentally find out that they've met a "woman" who didn't turn out to be quite as expected.
This is an easy read, very compelling (I read it over two evenings) and ideal for reading on trains etc, as although the chapters are reasonably long, there are obvious break points within them.
It should also be required reading for anyone who has ever considered going on holiday abroad without travel insurance and anyone who has ever seen cabin crew as just trolley dollies. Be prepared to have your eyes opened to the importance of both.
Ben Macfarlane is an insurance claim doctor - a doctor who will come and get you if you have become dangerously ill, or have broken your bones, all on the holiday of your dreams...He also goes to collect some of those who fail to take out insurance (usually kids whose parents don't know that their offspring are hitting drugs in Ibiza...)
If you like 'Casualty' then this is better. Fast-paced, funny, shocking, detailed, (both in the medical sense and in the sense on details around him on his journeys) and giving away little secrets of the tourist trade, I was so disappointed when I got to the end. His next book, about being a ship's doctor, is almost as good.
For a subject that could be quite mundane and boring, the author has injected humour into in and a story that keeps you reading and not wanting to put the book down.
If you enjoy this book, Air Babylon is also good
What i loved most about this book, there was not many mentions of the authors private life, it was mostly all about his patients, their illnesses and mishaps what they had abroad.
I was rivited most of the time with the stories of how he coped in flight with emergencys and how he did it to bring his patient safely back to their homeland.
The worse thing about this book is it had to come to an end. I note from the Amazon site, Dr Ben has made another similar book which I am going to purchase after I have read the book I am reading now. I am not removing Holiday sos from my kindle as I may read it again in a few months, it was that good.
