Product Description

Rising business executive Jake Peterson(Tim Matheson) is given a make-or-break assignment when he is sent to a small town for the purpose of severely downsizing the local tractor factory.

Upon his arrival,Jake is mistaken by the townsfolk as the man sent to save rather than destroy their community, and is treated as such, much to his discomfort.

Making his task even more difficult is Jake's blossoming romance with factory employee Emma Murphy (Melissa Gilbert), whose daughter Noelle (Michelle Trachtenberg) regards our hero as Santa Claus Incarnate.

As an old romantic softie, I love Christmas films; and I love a happy ending. We get one in this film. However, the plot is very similar to that of "A Christmas Romance" with Olivia Newton-John, made 2 years earlier in 1994. I was disappointed that the synopsis for this film was written on the reverse of the cassette in the three mainland Scandinavian languages but not in English, which is a bit daft since most Scandinavians speak English but few English speakers (apart from myself!)can read Scandinavian. This film for me continues in all the true traditions of Christmas, and I felt it worthy to add to my collection. The story begins in the boardroom of a tractor company reviewing staff cuts for the New Year. Jake Peterson (Tim Matheson) is given the unenviable task of visiting his hometown to assess the plant there. Instructed to approach the people covertly, he declares he is from a company seeking to order eighty tractors, and at once is given an heroes welcome. As he continues to assess the situation, he develops a guilty conscience, and which is enhanced when he falls in love with Emma (Melissa Gilbert). Emma's father, the manager of the plant, susses Jake’s ruse immediately, realising that no company approaching Christmas would embark upon an order of that magnitude. Jake is plunged into disgrace, and ridicule after his true intention is exposed. Returning to head office he comes up with a plan for a new line. Given a year by management to implement it, his plan offers security for the people of the town, and the personal hope in him to regain Emma’s respect and affection. Achieving this, he is vindicated and senses an affinity with an elderly gentleman there. Following his intuititive notion, Jake realises the old man is the estranged father he has searched for all his life. I can recommend this DVD as a very touching and moving film... CJB.

A precocious child acting like an adult and adults acting like children is not a pleasant mix. The script makes characters seem to have personality disorders as they talk and behave inconsistently in different scenes. Films do tend to exaggerate things to illustrate the point; however, in this film it is most often way over the top. Suspense and intrigue is good; however, it is sometimes done by actions that make one wonder why people are behaving that way rather than leading to a sense of suspense and intrigue. Then script writer seems to have taken ideas from other films without integrating them in a convincing way. For a Christmas film it lacked the Christmas spirit. For a family film it had some questionable behaviour that seemed to be a contrivance to link the poor scripting. Overall, the film left a uncomfortable, disappointing feeling.

So this is a tv movie, but it's actually got a really nice festive feel to it and isn't quite as clunky as a lot of afternoon dramas that leave you cringing after the first five minutes! It does have a fairly predictable plot line - you will guess the ending almost as soon as it starts, but that doesn't actually matter as it is an easy watch that makes you smile. It's a feel good curl up on the sofa film that's full of festive cheer.

This is definately an excellent Christmas movie, one to snuggle up on a couch with a hot mug of chocolate, it is a really good film. Emma is a widow, who is bringing up a young teenage daughter who lives in this little town. Which make tractors, but bussiness is not so good and the head office needs to make cut backs, Jake is sent to see how he can do this. This is hard for Jake as he was born in this little town, but had moved away many years ago.Watch the film and see how it turns out.

The good old-fashioned, feel-good, innocent romantic Christmas movie. The story is a little predictable, but it's still a sweet watch that brings a warm smile to the face on many occasions. A recommended family Christmas movie for anyone who's a softie at heart!
