I've had the pleasure of seeing sonic youth live twice and while they were great both time, I always wished i could hear them play a set list like this. This track selection for this live album is excellent with the band mainly concentrating on material from their sister album. the versions on display here are much livelier and more rocking than the studio versions. some highlights on this album include shizophrenia, tom violence and expressway. kim gordon also howls her through a prticularly fierce version of brother james. beauty lies in the eye on this album is also far better than the version that appears on sister.
if this album is so good, then why only 4 stars you might ask. well, there's only 2 small things that let this album down. the first being that, while the sound quality is crystal clear and far superior that of the Year that Punk Broke video, it is a lttle bit bassless and tinny. secondly, the ramones song that they've covered here are done in such a slapdash and chaotic (i know, slapdash and chaotic are what sonic youth do best) way that they don't really merit more than one listen. You'd be much better of just getting It's Alive by the Ramones and hearing them done right.
Apart from those minor quibbles, it is an excellent live album and i'd recomend it to any sonic youth fan.

For those of us unlucky enough to be regaled by our elders about the wonders of Sonic Youth live in the mid-80s whilst we were busy with cartoons, skateboards and BMXs, this is about as close as we can ever get to those halcyon days. Just about all of 'Sister' is here, and in far better shape than the muggy, hazy studio versions. From Steve Albini's bizarre introduction this record really doesn't let up in pace or volume, but still manages to illustrate the point in Sonic Youth's development when they wavered on the beautiful brink of melody and noise, order and chaos. It was about this time Bruce Russell of the Dead C saw them - and that's the genius of SY, that with every move they spun off whole new movements, ideas, and most importantly have exposed a generation of rock kids to the wonders of free jazz, noise, and improvisation - all of which is still true today, with a rejuvenated 5 piece SY fully recovered from the dark days of their early major label career.

I have had the pleasure of seeing sonic youth live twice. They were great both times but I always wished that they'd play a set list like this one. The song selection here is really top notch with the pick of the bunch being schizophrenia, tom violence, expressway and kim gordon howling her way through a particularly fierce brother james. the version of beauty lies in the eye is also much better than the Sister one. if you're a fan of the band of the band in any shape or form, then you should definitely consider buying this album.
There are only 2 things that really let this album down. the first being that, while the sound is very clear and much more listenable than their Year That Punk Broke video, it does veer a little towards the tinny side. Also, The ramones covers at the end of the album don't add anything to the proceedings. In my opinion, they're quite sloppy (i know, punk rock chaos is meant to be part of the point of sonic youth, but still) and barely merit more than one listen. Get yourself It's Alive by the Ramones if you want to hear these songs done properly.

I would just like to say that if you consider yourself a fan of the band Sonic Youth, then you must get this album. If you have ever seen them live, you will especially appreciate this recording, because of the high fidelity, and it truly sounds like you are there. This album is guaranteed to bring back memories of the show/s you've seen them at. But more than just being a great live album, it stands on its own, which is why Sonic Youth has been so endearing to their fans over the years. It just goes to show that some bands are just great in the studio and truly supergreat live. A couple of the track names here are printed wrong.. it should be "I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You" and "Beat on the Brat" (Yes, this is a live cover of the Ramones song). So pick this up if you are a SY fan. If you don't like it then don't call yourself a fan. Expressway to yr skull. Enough said.
