Oh my I did enjoy this book - if enjoyment can be defined by being glued to a chair and scared nearly witless. This story is really enthralling ( I loved the Cornish setting) and the plot is complex but so well structured that each twist just made my blood run a little colder. It all just rings so unnervingly true. A brilliant book, thoroughly recommended.

This is a brilliantly chilling supernatural thriller with a truly malevolent villain. It's a ghost story, but it's also an exploration of how bullying works, and why. The main story tells how capable, likeable single mother Bridget attempts to make a new life for herself and her daughter away from her daughter's abusive father by working as a housekeeper in a big, isolated house in Cornwall, with details of their former life in London told in flashback.

The house's secrets - and why it appears to be haunted - are gradually revealed, with the strands of the stories, both contemporary and historical, neatly woven together, the motivations and actions of characters past and present reflecting and informing each other, with every detail adding to the sense of unease as tension builds.

The writing is confident and compelling, and it was the right side of scary for me - there is no brutality on the page, only hints, psychological revelations, and that tension building and building to a very satisfying conclusion.

I loved the language in it. The vocabulary is rich and descriptive, drawing on both urban London and rural Cornwall, as well as the occasional use of more stylish literary words in the narrative - always apt, never flashy.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I'll definitely be reading more. Recommended.

This book absolutely terrified me. Warning: don't start it unless you have time to read a good chunk because Serena will keep you up all night (and you may need a night light for bed). Something different to my usual fare, but a real page turner. Great to see it out on Kindle. Highly recommended.

I'll start out by saying I'm a big fan of Serena Mackesy's books - I just wish there were more of them! Hold My Hand is the story of a mother and daughter escaping a violent relationship and getting a bit more than they bargained for in their isolated refuge. The supernatural aspect is a departure from her previous work but it's elegantly done and the characterisation make it very readable. I enjoyed it enormously and would (and have) recommend it highly.

Gripping, creepy, chilling and just wonderful. Hold my Hand is a tour de force, this is how you write a thriller, I was gripped from the first page. Mackesey is a talent to be reckoned with, turn the lights down, draw the curtains and enjoy the hypnotic chiller.

This is one I have had to buy friends who like to be scared, but under duvees or with a cushion. The sense of place that this author creates - one where you want to go and yet want to run away from is very compelling. Some of the main drama, whilst chilling, is maybe a little predictable, but the story works, as all good stories do, to my mind anyway, at a number of levels. What stayed with me as a thought, and probably spooked me most all the way through was that sense of naiveity, trust and fear children have about adults and, probably more important vice versa - or am I reading too deeply into this book. Anyway, Chilling and a great read.

and close the curtains before you begin! Mixes real-life terror with supernatural chills in a nicely satisfying page-turner, using all of the bogeymen ancient and modern. A tv adaptation would make my ideal Sunday night viewing. Off to download more from this writer, shame it isn't in print as it would make a really good Christmas gift; perfect for a cold winter night, although not if you're planning to spend your break in a large country house.

i loved this book..my first ghost story, but its so much more..this is the third book ive read by this auther and all are up there with the best. She nows how to lay out a story, keeps it interesting with strong characters with good dialogue..always a good twist or two thrown in.Would highly recomend to anyone who likes a thriller or a "gritty" story.I follow this lady(Serena Macksey/ Alex Marwood) on facebook as she never fails to start an intersting conversation ,always topical, humourous and sometimes controversial......
