Product Description

Jack Nicholson stars in Danny DeVito's biopic about labour leader Jimmy Hoffa. Hoffa was president of The Teamsters, the most powerful American union, until his connections to organised crime were uncovered and he disappeared without a trace in 1975. The screenplay is by David Mamet.

Danny De Vito's epic is an uncommonly ambitious, lavishly mounted biopic of the infamous Teamsters Union leader that sadly never lives up to that ambition and adds up to less than the sum of its parts. Jack Nicholson is more restrained than usual in the lead, but that ultimately goes for little as the film never gets close to Hoffa, who remains an emotional and political enigma throughout. Stylistic flourishes abound - De Vito has always been a visually imaginative director - and David Mamet's script delivers some good moments, but not enough of them to justify its scope or length. Ultimately Sylvester Stallone and Norman Jewison's flawed fictionalised take on Hoffa, F.I.S.T., is more satisfying and certainly more critical.

Whereas the Fox laserdisc that came out shortly after the film's release was packed with extras, most of which were carried over to the US Region 1 NTSC DVD - an enthusiastic commentary from De Vito, deleted scenes, news coverage of the Hoffa/Kennedy hearings, anecdotes from Teamster's, storyboards, on-set home movies, shooting script, stills galleries and more - the UK and European PAL releases are completely extras-free with only a decent 2.35:1 transfer going for it.

I'd always wanted to see Hoffa. It was a bit gruesome when it came out "brevity is the soul of wit" and all that. Anyway, I've got it on DVD and have watched it. It's all right. Didn't know Jack and Danny where Republicans. Anyway, it's not On The Waterfront and between starts viz a viz the violence it's a little bit over-egged. Danny Devito plays the niaf truck driver with burns on his hands from where the cigarettes have burned down in his cab and Jack Nicolson plays the eponymous Hoffa who promises to take the pain away. The clothes, props and general milleau are superb and there is a good soundtrack without any concessions to 50's rock and roll. The acting is all superb. It's very American, a lot of the razzmatazz around and election is well-filmed and shows something of the American state and the way they do things. But with a new President in 2016 it is an interesting document to see some of the characters in and around American politics around this time including Robert Kennedy. It's not particularly an entertaining film - like say Goodfellas - but it mines a different seam.

The boldness of director Danny DeVito's violent epic is matched by Nicholson's astonishing physical and vocal transformation into Jimmy Hoffa. An extremely underrated film. Well worth watching, again and again. A hugely underrated, passionate, powerful biopic. The performance by Nicholson is tremendous, and he really becomes Hoffa.

Jack Nicholson is not my favourite actor, but he is brilliant as Hoffa. Dany deVito gives one of his more serious performances and is so good at it. This is a great drama, superbly acted.

A Drawn out fictionalised account of what might have occurred in a roadside diner to Jimmy Hoffa on the Day He Disappeared. It is told in Flashback s using DeVito's also Fictional character to be the One strand that runs through the story so we are able to witness each moment that brought him to this point.though it attempts to be grand in its storytelling it is actually a commendable failure with some good moments, Particularly the ending.

Anyone seeing the origional clips of Hoffa will be STUNNED at how well Jack Nicholson plays him- Danny DeVito-who also produced this film plays a charachter who is an amalgamtion of several charachters in actual fact, which enhances the plot and explains his rise,AND fall brilliantly- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!! A++++

The bottom line is: watch out when mingling with mafia. At lest this is what the end of this movie suggests, even if Hoffa's actual disappearance remains a mystery.
Jack Nickolson is clearly great in this role, but I was particularly impressed by Danny de Vito (who also directed the movie) that, for once, plays a serious role.
It is a very good movie - recommended even if it is a bit long.
