Am not going to bore you about the Hobbit Trilogy, their are better reviews on amazon who can tell you better than me, so this is just a small review to show you what you are buying.

I would just like to say I loved all the films and for me the 'Battle of the Five Armies' was the best which fits in nicely to the 'Lord of the Rings', and the 3D is just brilliant. You get 15 discs and loads of bonus features. This box-set is worth every penny.

Overall films are amazing and bring a lot more to light. The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is because I am very disappointed with the overall presentation of the DVD's. We bought the extended box set to match out extended lotr box set. Upon removing from the cellophane wrapping and removal of the display sticker the original impression was amazing. It is a very smart presentation box. However once you open up the dvd boxes the way the dvds inside the box are laid out is not user friendly or even uniform across all three films. The way they are laid out could lead to scratching or fracturing if you are not careful taking out and putting back in. I can only assume this is a cost saving thing, but it is disappointing. Attached is a photo of my lotr layout and my hobbit layout inside the boxes. They also don't have the nice individual box for each film that lotr has.

You get the 3d Bluray and 2d Bluray version in this extended set along with a Digital HD UltraViolet code.DOES NOT INCLUDE iTUNES FILE, BUT IS COMPATIBLE WITH iPHONE, iPAD, iPOD TOUCH AND MOST ANDROID DEVICES. If you don't have 3d electronics now, your set if you get them later. The differences between the theatrical regular versions and the extended editions are as follows
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – 182 minutes (theatrical: 169 minutes)
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – 186 minutes (theatrical: 161 minutes)
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – 164 minutes (theatrical: 144 minutes)
The 3d set is 5 dollars more than the bluray set, so until the prices drop the 3d version is the better value for now.

It really goes against the grain with me to write anything other than a glowing review of anything associated with Tolkien but sadly it is the case with the Hobbit Movies

Firstly the boxset itself....The discs themselves in both picture and sound are as you would expect of superb quality but however the outer box and the inner three boxes are of a lesser quality in terms of build and plastic quality unlike the superbly presented Lord Of The Rings Trilogy Blu Ray Extended Edition Boxset

After three days the outer box started to come apart and i had to rectify this with some Super Glue as it would appear that a minimal amount of silicone adhesive had been used in the construction (cost cutting in other words)
The inner boxes are constructed of very flimsy brittle and totally non Blu Ray type cheap black plastic and whats even worse is the method of open and closing is so badly thought out that it is a nightmare to close the boxes and its only a matter of time till they split and or crack

Now to the movies themselves... don't get me wrong they are very good movies as long as you accept them for what they are which are 3 movies loosely and i mean very loosely based on a book which employ a mother load of CGI and a ridiculous amount of artistic licence like characters that were never in the book being given starring roles, Legolas & Galadriel for example.

The saddest thing off all is that its hard to believe that the same Director (Peter Jackson) who did such a superb job with The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy did such a poor job here.

I've been waiting for this for many years and now that it has arrived I'm able to recreate the joy of having watched these wonderful movies again at home.

I've been watching the 3D versions at home and even recognising that it's being upscaled to 4k, the visual clarity and standard is impeccable. The 3D is punchy with lovely definition, with only the odd, rare artifacting appearing around the silhouette of the odd character when there's a fast moving green screen scene. But nothing that's hindering the visual quality and my appreciation.

I'll return later for a proper review when I've been able to sample all the extra discs, but the extended scenes are, in true Jackson fashion, all well suited to this special release.

The extra scenes are all obvious, some of them quite important and lengthy and create the typical family competition of who can shout first 'this is new!'

Overall a fantastic addition to the collection. Why did I give it 4 stars and not 5? Because of the terrible packaging. It looks quality on the outset, but is terribly designed. The main box comes with 3 dvd boxes inside, but each movie has it's collection of bluray discs cumbersomely packed into a badly designed case which makes the discs very difficult to take out and put back in without scratching, but also makes it very hard to close the actual box again. Shame really as I loved the LOTR boxset.
